Well my 2nd to 3rd is getting really really hard to get into gear at high rpms. So i guessing iv got something bent or worn out, but before i rip the tranny out is there any sure way to get an idea of my problem? Maybe something I can do to tell if it is a syncro?
There is not a linkage adjustment for our cars is there?
My car did the same thing with a bad clutch. I don't know if this is your problem, but is a cheaper place to look than the tranny. Mine was also hard on the 3rd to 4th shift.
Don't really know how to diagnose it, except to say shift at a lower RPM.
Having said that, here's where the clutch comes into play. When shifting at high RPMs, the high centrifugal forces prevent the clutch from fulling disengaging; leading to hard or missed shifts. I understand that this is fixed/reduced in many aftermarket clutch setups.
I was told there is no linkage adj. on C5s. I would test the clutch; floor it at low rpms in a high gear, see if it slips; or let out the clutch when sitting in first gear, it should lurch hard and stall. I had a problem with grinding gears, popping out of gear, not going into gears when I first bought my vette. I had to have the tranny rebuilt $1200. Its fine now.
The tranny has never been gone through but, the clutch is a sepc stage 3. My car is putting out 500 rwhp but that paticular clutch is suppost to be good to 500. I cant see why the clutch would be causing me all these problem with less then 6k on it. Maybe im wrong.
I started having these problems after I had a spec 3 put in my car. I broke it in easy for 500 miles and it felt very good. I started rolling into it slowly and had no problems either, but the first time I hit it hard it would not shift. I told the shop and they put a brand new spec 3 in it, they also told me not to go so many miles on the break in. I went about 250 miles hit it hard and the same thing happened when trying to shift. Other than not being able to shift a high rpm's the clutch felt fine, no slipping or anything else. I took it back to the shop and they put a new slave cylinder and a new master cylinder in my car at my expense, but of course the car did the same thing. They put a centerforce clutch in after everything else failed and I have had zero trouble since.
I'm not saying that spec's are bad or that this is happing to your car, this was just my experience. I hope this helps.
One more thing I noticed was that 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd shifted w/o problems but 3rd to 4th and higher seemed to be where I had problems. I am by no means a clutch expert but it seemed to me that it wasn't necessarally the 3rd to 4th shift that was making the problems but the high rpm's for a longer period of time was the culprit.
