Getting parts, gaskets, tools, etc. ready for my heads and cam swap, but I'm concerned about one thing:
I've got the A4 Auto tranny, and I know lots of guys have removed and reinstalled their pulleys - My question is HOW did you hold the engine in place to keep it from turning over?
LS1 tech mentions either the special GM tool, or a screwdriver thru the starter opening. Is everyone using the screwdriver thru the starter opening, if so HOW, and how well does that work? OR, have you guys used the special GM holding tool, how did that work, and where do you get one (other than GM)?
Let me know what you used to keep the engine from turning over when you removed and reinstalled your front pulley ON AN A4.
I bought the Flywheel holding tool. It is made by Ken Moore and runs about $100. Well worth it IMO. It bolts to where the starter is located, so you need to remove the starter. No bigger though, just remember which wire goes where.
I am replacing my balancer too. I took one look at all the crap that has to come off to get to it and pulled out the only tool I needed.. my cell phone, and called the mechanic to make an appt.
TTT, does my question make sense? I know lots of guys have done this before, just wondering how you did it?
CP-745 impact wrench 3/8" id air line and 120lbs line pressure took mine off no problem.
BTW pin the crank while you have it off, and if you do any kind of spirited driving I would recommend replacing the POS stock balancer with an ATI and a ARP bolt.
This will solve 2 problems 1. you won't have to do it again when the stock balancer separates, 2. you will only need to torque the bolt to 150 lbs ft.
I've done several, I use a 1/2" drive impact to remove the old bolt and once the damper is installed and seated I use red loctite and the same 1/2" drive impact until the bolt stops rotating.
Like I said I've done several and have not had any problems.
