It simply refers to what the engine was originally. An LS1 is 346 ci. A 383 ci 'LS1' is just an LS1 that has been bored/stroked. A 402 ci LS2 is really an LS2 block that was bored/stroked, etc...

Also, LS1 was the designation for the new family of Generation 3 GM V-8's, introduced in 1997, successor to the LT1 Gen2 family which was introduced in '92 (LS1 family also includes LS6, desiganted as LSx)
