I just completed the column lock mod (C5 Solutions) and at the same time I did the skip shift eliminator mod... Now I get this message (Above) and it kills the engine as soon as I let the clutch out... This is intollerable, the first time it happened it left me backing out of a parking stall into traffic and I had to go through this stupid procedure... Anyone know how to eliminate this scourge?
I fixed one stupid system problem and now I have another one... Thanks GM.

Hi, i have the same problem !
started out with pull key ..... now it says service column lock.
I had a GM mechanic look at it last night with a tech2, and everything is ok.
but the lock does not close.
So my steering wheel is free, but the engine stalls when i start to move foreward !
I ordered the CLB last night and hope this will solve the problem.
What troubles me is that you have changed it, and still have problem ???
Try this:
Pull fuse 25 in passenger footwell for 15 sec.
insert fuse
insert and turn key but dont start
clear all codes.
remove key
close door, lock door
now start as normal
The "pull key" message usually comes from the security system not recognizing the ignition key. In many cases, the resistor pellet on the key is dirty or damaged. Try cleaning off the key, or using the other key.
Re: Pull Key, Wait 10 sec. What gives? (vette2001c5)
I had the same problem when I installed the CLB. Never had a problem with the column lock or anything before the bypass. I just recently got the "service column lock" message. I was told that my BCM is bad. I just tossed the CLB and hooked the column lock back up the right way and have had no more problems. :smash:
Re: Pull Key, Wait 10 sec. What gives? (97silverbullet)
The first time i got that message, my column locked. The lock solenoid was jammed. It had to be pryed back, as putting power to it did nothing. I installed the CLB, & it worked fine. My installation instructions for the CLB said that if installed properly, no codes will set. I would just retrace the install steps, just to be sure you did everything in order. Or try reinstalling it again. If that doesn't work, maybe some other members know a little more about codes that could help you further- good luck SCOTT
"Pull key" can be security - as suggested, clean pellet, and also inside the switch. It can also be that you cycle the ignition twice before the computer has a chance to figure out which position the column lock is in and cycle the lock itself. (See Owner Manual) It can also be related to column lock failure, but if I were getting the message on a car that had the bypass installed, I'd start with disconnecting the power for 30 seconds...
I've installed about 10 CLB's, including 2 on our own cars, and have never had a problem other than my coupe. It had the "SCL" message with the lock stuck open (so I could drive the car). Installed CLB, still had the message. Pulled the fuse for BCM, problem went away - finally, no more message.

I have had the pull key message show up once or twice in 4+ years however 1 of the times was while I was sitting at a traffic light with engine running and the clutch pushed in. That was about 2 years ago.

I seem to get it pretty often on my 98. I was hoping it had nothing to do with the column lock I think it is just a security thing, it always works fine after pulling key and restarting and the wheel isnt locked.

I had the same exact problem as 97silverbullet on my 98 vert. I contacted C5 solutions and they sent me another CLB. After roughly 2 weeks I started getting the "pull key..." message on every start. I reconnected the column lock and have had no problems. The CLB is still in place in case I need it. I'll live with the threat of column lock for now over the annoyance of starting the car and then shutting it down and restarting every time. C5 Solutions thinks it could be the BCM but since there are no other faults and I'm out of warranty not much I can do unless I go out of pocket. For now "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." :seeya
On both installations I went exactly by the instructions. I've also done the pellet cleaning, inside the switch cleaning, battery disconnect, and everything else recommended on this forum and still no escape from "pull key..." with CLB installed.
I've had the "Pull Key..." message twice recently, both times on a hot day. Never had it lock up, though...if you wiggle the wheel hard, it can loosen the column lock enough for it to retract.
I have the CLB installed and see the same message appear when I first start the car. After I remove the key and restart it it goes away. It's damn annoying, and I'm thinking about removing the CLB for now and living with the chance of column lock.

Yea REAL hard. In fact when I had the dubious honor of Service Column Lock,
I was in middle of BFE. To make matters worse it was on a Sunday at a hotel the day after Ecklers 2000 in Cocoa Beach, Florida. No dealerships open on Sunday.
I just turned the wheel as hard as I could until the lock broke. Trust me I really wouldn't recommend this. It feels like you're going to rip the steering wheel right off. Use it as a last resort. Since I live in the great state of Florida
and these two words are never used in the same sentence "State Inspection".
I have no locking mechanism. Of course I get to pull up next to cars with no fenders, hoods, front windshields, etc, but that's another story.
Could my car be stolen? I guess if they want it bad enough. But mine is a weekend driver and I try to park it a calculated safe spot. I believe the whole concept of the column lock was a Federal Safety issue.
But that rule has since been relaxed, now I believe 2001 and 02's(autos) don't have the capability to lock the wheel. It's still an issue with the manuals, because of no parking brake.
Re: Pull Key, Wait 10 sec. What gives? (97silverbullet)
I forgot to mention, C5 Solutions also sent me another CLB module which didn't make a difference. I don't blame C5 Solutions since there product works in the majority of C5s. Seems like the '97 and '98 models are the only ones having this problem. I'm not going to invest in a replacement BCM at this time. Maybe GM will expand the recall to '97 (yeah right). I'll just keep the CLB kit in the glove compartment till I need it.
I have a CLB and also get the Pull Key message. It is not everytime I start the car but enought that it is annoying. To me though I would rather get the Pull Key message and not have to worry about the Column Lock message. So I will live with it for now. I will also try cleaning the key and see if it helps any.
It appears that this message is appearing more and more with those who have installed the CLB. I have mine sitting in its package and have yet to install yet. Something in the PC must be detecting the presence of the CLB and reacting to it. Just my .02 cents worth.

I'm in the same boat here. My 1997 has had 2 different CLB's installed, but the result didn't change : "PULL KEY..." 95% of the time. I also don't blame C5 Solutions -- they have tried to be very helpful.
I'm going to get an actual Column Lock unit (the GM part, not a CLB) so that I can do some "reverse engineering" on the stupid thing and find an alternate solution. Anyone have one that they are willing to donate to the cause?
Just a hunch, but has anyone with this problem tried pulling fuse #25 (Ithink thats the number). I did this on installation of the CLB, and have nefver had an issue with it. :seeya
