Hey Guys!! I'm going to be installing these headers next weekend and wondering if you have any last minute advice. I am going to purchase
O2 sims just encase the rear's throw codes. I've never done a header install before and I'm just wondering if there is anything I should look out for? Thanks
Put the exhaust in with all bolt loose, and take a good look where the O2 sensors will go and mentally route the wires. Remove exhaust piping downstream of headers and then take your time and make sure the O2 wires are routed well and secured. I didn't do this and had to spend lots of time *after* everything was tight and route/secure the wiring. It was much more difficult with the tight spaces, and I still worried about burning wires. Other than that, the install goes per the directions. I think the directions even tell you to route/secure the O2 wiring before installing the cats, etc., but I wasn't paying attention. The install directions are very detailed.
You may want to think about what header gaskets you are going to use and have them available (supplied gaskets from dynatech vs LS1 OEM). I can not comment specifically on the gaskets that come with the dynatech headers, but a lot of the "aftermarket" gaskets seem to have poor reputations. You may want to do a search on this.
I did this mod about 2 weeks ago and had no problems. i wouldn't worry about gaskets, the ones that came with the headers were top notch. the only thing different i did than the directions said was I never touched the starter, i didn't need to. Mine is getting tuned this week, I did throw codes, it was the front two sensors. we will be moving the front ones forward and the deleting the rear ones.
Mine just went in last weekend and zero problems to report. They were a little tight going in on the passenger side, but after a bit cussing and smoking a cigar they slipped into place. For some reason they settled a little bit after some driving and began to rattle on the passenger side heat shield along the torque tube, but a little pry bar persuasion and the heat shield is not a problem any more. Also the jet hot coating stinks pretty bad when it's first burning in, but is getting less noticeable every day. So far I haven't had any check engine lights due to the high-flow cats, but am either adding sims or deleting the rears from the system when I get tuned just to be safe. Good luck!
This Is obvious but once your done with the Install, or even while your doing the Install, double check everything! make sure everything Is tight ect, ect... B/C one loose bolt and you will loose the Headers true potential. Good luck with them.
I hope this install is as easy as you guys are making it sound, my only concern is removing the stock system
The night before you do the removal, get your engine up to temperature and spray all the bolts with penetrating spray (Aerokroil, etc.) and the bolts should come off easily the next day when you start the work.
I also did the dynatechs a few weeks back. * I didnt read the instructions*. I found removing the stock exhaust was the easy part.
I had to move the starter out of the way (mines a 99'). Also never had a problem with codes, yet anyways.
The gaskets that come with are pretty decent as well.
I think youll be happy with the results.
G'luck
i did mine myself....no leaks .....no problems....just take your time ...old exhaust was very easy to remove.....take extra care routing your o2 wires away from heat.....i had to loosen the bolts on the starter, but didnt have to remove them. it was easier than i expected...only bolts you may have problems w/ is the stock manifold to exhaust pipe...i broke a couple but it made removal even easier.. you can do it.....
