Default I Need More Power!!!

On my '99 6M FRC, I have: Halltech intake, LS6 intake manifold (has to be installed), LG Pro's (no cats) & Borla Straight Pipe exhaust. I would like to get the LG G5x3 cam, but I was told by someone that I would most likely have to change my valve-springs every 10k - 12k miles. Is this really the case? Should I get a milder cam? Maybe I should just get a DTE rear w/ 4.10's and get nitrous. Someone please help!!! I would prefer a H/C setup, but don't want to have to change the valve-springs every so often. Thanks!!

I'm not sure what amount of lift that cam has, but it is a fact that higher lift cams (580+) wear springs out much faster than lower lift cams. That is the very reason I went with a little less lift (570) with my cam. I wanted as low maintance car as I could get and still make some power. I might be leaving a small amount of hp on the table (5hp??) but I can just ease my bottle pressure up about 10-15psi and make that up

ECS did my G5X3 cam swap, as part of thier package they installed comp 921 springs (much stiffer than stock) for the extra lift. I doubt you would need to chage them that often if you upgrade the springs too. But I would give them a call if you are really concerned about it.

So what cam would give me a good gain but not increase maintenance. I'm thinking of cam+valvetrain or maybe even H/C. What do I do?

While there is nothing wrong with a Cam... Keep in mind there is usualy tuning to go along with it also.. so tack another $400 or so on to it..

I personally decided against it.. because I dont want to wait till my oil reaches 140 degrees before I move the car, or break springs.. I love a cam lope. but not worth the added aggrivation..

And if you go with a small cam..that does not require the above concerns.. Then the gains are so small you hardly notice it..

Catch 22...

I recommend to anyone that wants a great street/strip cam go with the Patrick G TQ cam on Xer Lobes. These are less aggresive lobes (compared to LSK) so there is not as much were and tear on your springs. I am running this cam now making 440RWHP/412RWTQ and the car runs like a bat out of hell (high 11's) yet docile enough to let your grandmother drive it.
Cam specs are: XER 228/232 588/592 110+1

My car is making 330RWTQ at 2500RPM

You will need to upgrade your springs with pretty much any cam upgrade but changing your springs every 10-12K is none sense. This is a pretty small cam by todays standards.

Best wishes,
J.R.

Yeah with the LS6 Intake Manifold & either 3.90's or 4.10's that should really help performance wise, maybe you should get a lightweight aluminum Flywheel also. If you didn't already, I'd get It Dyno Tuned as well. I hope you get the performance your looking for.

I have the G5x-3 cam and absolutly love it. I also did a spring upgrade to the comp 921's and hardened pushrods. The 921 springs are dual springs so they wont have to be changed as often as you stated. This is an awesome cam and i wouldnt trade it for any other. Good luck with you decision.
