Default Short Vs. Long Block

I know this might sound like a stuid question but, I have a 2003 A4 is it a short or long block and are they interchangable.

I'm looking to do a direct replacement to a 427, but don't know which to pick. It is my everyday ride.

Shortblock and Longblock refers to the level of completion. A shortblock has no heads, a longblock includes heads and maybe cam. It depends on what you need to buy. If you're replacing to a larger engine, you will need the longblock or even more likely, the complete crate motor.

I would just look at what was included in the longblock "package". You might want to get different heads, cam, intake, so it would probably be better to get the shortblock and piece together the rest needed for your longblock, but for the original question the above is correct, it just specifies how "complete" the motor is.

Not really. A longblock is fine if he wishes to reuse the components that are not included from his existing motor. Things like oil pan, intake, valve covers, etc are prefectly fine to reuse.

That would depend on what block they used to build the new motor from, a lot of LS1 parts will not swap over to LS2's, but if it is a 427 they more than likely would use a ls1/ls6 in which everything would swap over.

Correct. I was thinking if he's going from an LS1 or even an LS6 to an LS7, he wouldn't want the old heads.
