Default Oil Pressure Too High!! Help Please

2001 C5

A few nights ago while driving, I glanced down and noticed my Oil PSI gauge risen to 80. It usually runs between 40-55. I thought maybe this was a temporary deal, so I didn't worry too much about it. I continued to drive around 8 more miles to the house. Car ran fine. RPM's looked normal.

I have since cranked the car a few times and the oil PSI at first looks normal for just a few seconds, then goes right back to 80. Both the gauge and the heads up display show 80.

Any idea what is causing this?? I am really not mechanically inclined at all, so any help would be appreciated.

When you turn the ignition on with the engine off, does it show this pressure. If yes, your oil pressure sensor is bad, a common problem. You must remove your intake manifold to replace. Search for instructions, you can do it yourself. It would cost about $200-400 to get it done. DO NOT OVERTORQUE, 15 FT-LBS.

Didn't see the "not mechanically inclined", have a dealer replace it, then if it goes bad again (lots do), he will have to repace free.

well the good news is I am gonna do the work at a buddies house who is very mechanically inclined. He seems to think it is not too difficult.

Is there a special tool that we need to remove the fuel lines?? I think I read this somewhere...any help to answer this question??

Also, is the part a "dealer only" type of part or can I get it at the local parts store?

Thanks again for your help.

Before you rip into it make sure you don't have any codes. My battery went bad awhile ago and after replacing the battery my temp gauge pegged. Long story short I reset all the codes and it has worked normally since. Worth a shot anyway. Good luck!

Mine just went too, so I going to replace it with the one from Rock Auto, part # PS308. Here is a link, a little over $40. Everyone tells me the replacement ones from GM are crap.

Good luck,

Clayton from Las Vegas

I believe this is the denifitive DIY link on the Forum for replacing your sensor.

Just had this problem occur. Good to know its just a sensor. Sounds like it should be covered under warranty.

How long after the dealer replaces it, is the warranty good for.. I mean, if the car was out of warranty... the dealer replaces it.. and like 4 years later... it quits.. again...? lol...

Don't need to remove fuel lines. Leave them connected and just swing the manifold out of the way. Worked for me!

I just had alot of electrical work done on my car, having a CarPC and various stereo components installed. A couple of weeks before that, I replaced a headlight gear and the dealership reinstalled some wiring harness issues from a hokey remote car starter system that the previous owner mucked up.

Yesterday I looked down while driving around and see my oil gauge pegged at 80. When I read it on the DIC, it says 129 PSI. Holy sheeeitee...! Nothing goofy on oil levels or the way it drives.. (would I have symptoms before catastrophe anyway?).

I am thinking all of the battery d/c and electrical rewires might have messed up the codes. In this thread, I saw that might be an issue. Can anyone tell me how to check or reset codes?? Do I need a special tool? Is this something the dealer is going to rape me on?

I can probably change the guage out (Excellent link to the write up. Extremely helpful.) but would like to be sure it isn't something simpler.

Thanks guys. I will post photos of the CarPC soon, once I get the software up to par. Looks and sounds great.
