Default LS2 vs. LS1 Timing Sprockets

I know the LS2 timing chain is stronger and I believe used as the replacement for all LS1 and LS2 engines now. My question: Is there any difference in the timing sprockets, particularily the Cam sprocket from the LS2 vs. LS1. The sprocket I got has no perimeter lightening holes, it is just a solid sprocket except for the bolt and cam dowel holes. It also has a raised ridge running around aproximately half way around the perimeter where the usual drilled lightening holes should be. Is this what an LS2 cam sprocket looks like? Also is the timing chain damper necessary if using LS2 timing set?

Thanks,

Alan

The LS2 cam sprocket is used as the trigger for the cam sensor which is on the front timing cover on LS2. You can use it but it probably is no better or worse.

Thanks See5,

I presume that the mystery ridge on the sprocket triggers the sensor you mentioned to show cam position.

My logic was new chain, new sprockets. From what you say it won't make any difference one way or the other??

The LS2 chain is a great upgrade but the pulley is probably no gain unless you have a ton of miles.

I always use the LS2 chain whenever the front cover is off, never had a problem with the stock LS1 sprockets

here's a pic from an LS2 cam swap last year

some interesting info: the 2007's use a center bolt gear, when swapping cams the '05/6 sprocket(3 bolt) must be used

Default That's the sprocket

Thanks Steve for the picture. That is indeed the sprocket. Since I already have it, I will install it as a new sprocket set for the new chain. Could have saved a few bucks I suppose. I do not have the damper and my block ('99) is probably not drilled for the damper anyway. I will find out tomorrow when I pull it apart. So it will go back less damper, but a fresh timing set for the new cam. --Alan
