I know the LS2 timing chain is stronger and I believe used as the replacement for all LS1 and LS2 engines now. My question: Is there any difference in the timing sprockets, particularily the Cam sprocket from the LS2 vs. LS1. The sprocket I got has no perimeter lightening holes, it is just a solid sprocket except for the bolt and cam dowel holes. It also has a raised ridge running around aproximately half way around the perimeter where the usual drilled lightening holes should be. Is this what an LS2 cam sprocket looks like? Also is the timing chain damper necessary if using LS2 timing set?
The LS2 cam sprocket is used as the trigger for the cam sensor which is on the front timing cover on LS2. You can use it but it probably is no better or worse.
Thanks Steve for the picture. That is indeed the sprocket. Since I already have it, I will install it as a new sprocket set for the new chain. Could have saved a few bucks I suppose. I do not have the damper and my block ('99) is probably not drilled for the damper anyway. I will find out tomorrow when I pull it apart. So it will go back less damper, but a fresh timing set for the new cam. --Alan
