Hey guys, im rebuilding the motor in my car and wanted to add a higher stall torque converter. I have a g5x3 cam, ls6 ported heads, 3.42 differential, and all other bolt ons and wuill probably have around 460-480 RWHP.
I have the choice of 3 converters
Yank 2600 reasonable price
Vigilante 3500 (from forums member) $$$ but higher stall, and I heard their converters are pretty good
or this one 2600-2800 stall converter on ebay (new)
cheapest price
here is the dilemma, I dont know much about converters, and I want one that will increase the drivability of my car with my g5x3 cam on the street. I dont do any track driving, just street, and It is my daily driver, I drive 100+ miles per day. also better gas mileage is a plus. any suggestions?
A high stall speed converter will play havoc on your stock drive train when you jump on it. Also it sucks for going around curves and traction issues when you jump on it.
For all around use, I would go with a 2400 RPM stall converter which is a good all around compromise, else wise I would get my credit card out for a new RPM tranny and DTE Rear.
[QUOTE=ajg1915]What type of driving are you going to do.

customer service, this is worth $100's quite often; I'd suggest giving Dave a call at Yank; 3200 would be good on the street
this something you don't want to do twice when factoring the labor involved
At least a SS3200 with that cam.
I've avoid that ebay converter like the plague. And just because it fits the 4L60E doesn't mean it'll fit the corvette.
Trust me, you don't want to pay labor twice.
I wonder why all of you guys keep suggesting a relatively high stall speed converter. He is running 3.42 gears and not the standard 3.15 so if he uses a 3200 or 3500 stall speed he will need a beefed up tranny and differential.
Because gottiman did not specify that he was going to predomiately drag race a stall speed in the 2400 to 2600 range would be easier on both the drive train for daily commuting.
The 2001 coupe my brother has with 3.15 gears and a relatively stock motor is all over the road if you drop the gas pedal on it because it has a high speed stall converter "3500" installed by the previous owner.
I personally don't like high speed stall converters except for drag cars as they are unpredictable on the street unless you are feathering the gas pedal.
My 2001 vette with maggie has a 2400 RPM stall speed converter and has much better street manners in my opinion.
Again the most important criteria in selecting a torque converter stall speed is what purpose is the vehicle going to be used for.
I've got a Yank SS3200 stall converter in my DAILY DRIVER and I LOVE it - even my wife can't tell it's there when she drives it - it is just like stock
This winter I'm installing AFR 205 heads and a G5X3 cam - LG told me the Yank SS3200 w/ the G5X3 cam is a very good street or track combo - myself, even though it's my daily driver, I'm almost (I'd rethink my thinking) wishing I had installed a Yank SS3600 converter -
Yes I drive it daily, and I don't drag race or other. And I don't have to go top speed all the time (if ever) - BUT, when I get on it, I want it to GET THERE NOW!!!!!!!!!
well, we are rebuilding my mtor, so I know it will dyno at least 50RWHP more then before. I am looking for a converter that will increase my drivability of my g5x3 cam, so when i put the car in drive, and let off the brake, the car wont take off by itself lol. I want to get rid of that, and increase the performance a little when at WOT. I want the gas mileage to stay relatively the same, and gas mileage the same.
