98' automatic craving for a 6 speed!

I decided on the conversion because my 02 C5 was a gift from my wife and I wanted to hang on to it for a long time; I was just bored with an A4. I spent over $6K, but that included a new DTE 3.90 rear. I was also able to sell my parts and recoup about $1500 of my investment. Was it worth it in $, probably not. But I still have the car my wife surprised me with and now it's a blast to drive!

The reason your cost escalated is because you bought an upgraded rear-end.
The actual labor is probably around $2K if you don't turn your own wrenches. Find a good set of core parts or someone willing to swap with you and all you'll have to spring for is the enhancements you want.
You keep forgetting about the cost of selling and buying a car, plus the sales tax involved.
I happen to go all out and buy a textralia clutch assembly, RPM Stage V tranny, DTE Stage V rear and brace. But at least I know my drive train will hold up when I do my motor build-up.
To each his own.

but it's a decision you really need to be informed about before you start tearing into it. My costs:MN6 parts: $1800
labor: $1500
DTE 3.90 rear: $1800
Various other GM parts required: $400
Shipping costs $300
Loss of vette for over a month
Sold A4 parts for $1500
In my case I haven't regretted the decision, but make sure you find someone that is comfortable doing the labor. The only issue we had to spend some brain bytes on was getting the cruise control to work correctly with the MN6. Reflashing the computer wasn't a problem.

However, there is no cost for the lost of the car unless it's your only mode of transportation.
You still do not take into account the cost of buying and selling vehicles and the sales tax implications.

But it does give you the opportunity to upgrade - for instance, I was going to move up from a C-5 Coupe to a Z06 until I discovered the "consequences" of selling the C5 my wife had purchased for me new!
