Default service active handling HCcode1288

This is a streeing wheel posision sensor can anybody tell me how to check this without a scan tool. I had the enginge out. The steering wheel could have gotten turned. Brought car in for alignment shop said they needed to rotate steeringwheel. Where do I start if the steering wheel has been turned but is in the proper posision Visually.

I had a friend that had a scan tool we got about 4.5 volts on the digital side of swps got 4.? for yaw rate Lateral acclerometer 4.43? Anolog reading on the scan tool would read 243 and not change when we turned the steering wheel. May be ebcm. Help please.jeff

What year car do you have and do you have active handling or just traction control? It makes a difference.

Steering sensor is located at the base of the steering column at the floor board just above the brake pedal. It's a ring around the steering column with a connector at 9 o'clock.

It could be that the connector is loose or there is a problem with the module (I believe EBCM) that monitors the sensor.

You should be reading 2.5 volts when the steering position sensor and the steering wheel is properly centered. Hope that helps.

Get this resolved like yesterday. The active handling computer goes NUTS with this situation and you don't EVEN want to know what replacing this stuff is going to cost. Here's a hint - you can almost buy a supercharger for your car for the same price.

It the active hadling part of the ebcm and if so what do I replace the switch or the ebcm I get no anolog volt readings when I see the vots change with the digital. Digital seems to be working is there a spot on the steering shaft that the sterring wheel posision sensor reads or does that make no diffrence The sterring wheel may have gotten turned and I dont't know where to start.
Thank everyone. It is cold in FARGO ND no I have not seen the movie because it reminds me to much of myself.

One of three things is happening. 1) you have a bad ground somewhere, 2) your steering wheel is rotated out of aligment (quite possible if you've recetly pulled the rack or maybe after a serious alignment, or 3) you have a bad sensor.

If you search the Archives, there are a bunch of good threads on this topic. Search "Steering wheel position Sensor" in the topic line, and you sould get a half a dozen good threads about the proper diagnosis. If your rack was out the wheel is likely out of phase - the procedure to check and fix are in this thread - http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...highlight=1288

I had these codes in my 01 z and checked all the voltage at the sensor which seemed to be where it should be. So I went ahead and cleaned all grounds first... Error came back. Cleaned and resat EBCM connection, and again codes came back. Finally I went to the dealer (Fred Beans) and got a new steering wheel position sensor and replaced it. Kind of a PITA job but not too bad (just be prepared to lay upside down on the floor under the cloumn for a while). Total cost was about 4 hours of time (overall) and I think it was 35-45 bucks (maybe it was more - I can't remember - for the sensor. The sensor install took me about 2 hours to do. There is a link to a great set of directions here...http://www.ddisoftware.com/c5-procs/ Who ever wrote them thanks!!! They beat the hell out of the GM Manual!!!
