Default Heads & Cal Emissions Cam

I am planning on a heads/cam upgrade (retain stocTB/intake/exhaust). The car is an '03 coupe and is/will be used for both street and HPDE. There have been a couple of informative threads recently concerning heads/cam selection but I have somewhat unique requirements/restraints. The goal is to get, at a minimum, higher hp/tq numbers than a stock C5Z, better accel performance at the track (road course), retain docile street manners, and a mandatory requirement to pass Cal. emissions. Revs would be limited to 6500 max. If I need to have 2 different tunes for performance and passing smog then that's
acceptable.

I plan to go with the AFR 205 w/comp springs heads. What I don't know is what type of cam I should be looking for, given the requirements I have listed above; and what type of hp/tq numbers I should expect with this type of package (heads/cam only & pass Cal. emissions). I have talked to LGM and plan to talk to additional shops/tuners (A&A, etc.), but any info/suggestions provided here would be greatly appreciated.

When I spoke to LGM they recommended their G5X"E" cam to go w/the AFR heads. The hp numbers they said I could expect seemed a little optimistic (400+ RWHP). Does anyone have this type of cam in a heads/cam only setup and what tpye of hp/tq numbers do you get?

TIA

400 plus hp is not optimistic, it's very realistic. Search for users named "illmac77" and "z49 z06" They have this cam too. 450ish hp.

I got my heads/cam package with the need to pass smog. It makes great low end torque and good HP. Those are great heads, I went with the 5.3 truck heads, ported, decked, and big valves, for less money. I think my cam would work well for use as you describe: Comp cam 218/218 with .561"/.561" lift on a 114 LSA. Most folks will tell you to go bigger, but most that dyno higher HP numbers will have less torque. As long as you stay with a 114 LSA and keep duration down to 224 or less you will pass smog, keeping the cats of course.

Switchbarrel has basically the same set up as me and toque, from what i have researched the g5x1e that we have will pass emmisions (i have not been up to chicago to stop by and had it done for fun yet) on a 90* day i put down 458/423 with my afr and that cam, its completly drivable and i am extreamly happy...

I like a lot my 220/224 114 which Andy reccommended. Drives very near stock, more power across the band (not peaky)and works very well with AFRs. Consensus is that they should pass---further consensus that 224/228s might pass with good tuning.

Hi Joe.

Call Tony @ AFR. He has a 224-228 that will pass smog and idles great.
I listened to this setup on his C5 and it had less valve train noise then my stock '02 C5. He has done all the engineering on this setup and can supply you with everything you need.

I sent you a PM. I would like a good digital copy of that road runner picture you have in your profile.

Thanks Joe. I've been a Jim Hall fan since his early days.
