Default Frame saver question...

Just ordered the A-A Engine frame savers from the forum (on sale this month for 69.95)...

Should I weld these in addition to bolting them on? If so, any special thing I need to tell the guy who is going to help me do this (he has a nice shop.) :flag

Cowboy,
If you weld them you lose them when you sell the car, plus you would be welding aluminum to steel. Not a welder by trade so don't know how that would work. I"ve had mine on for about 2 months now and absolutely no problems with just using the screws.

later,

Screws work great although I used one size larger holes as the specified size was too tight.

Thank for the help, ya'll! Sounds like good advice. Didn't realize there were two different metals involved.

I welded and bolted mine on, Andy of AA advised that this was desirable especially if you were to hit a larger bump only bolting might allow the bolt to bend.

If you have these welded make sure your welder uses caution to not burn the plastic body piece that makes contact with the skid bars there. You will also need to hit the weld area and that area directly around there with some paint to prevent rusting which could occur very soon due to welding. I used spray on black rustoleum and it worked great. :D :D

How did they weld it? Apparently it is an aluminum skid bar and steel bracket. I don't have the car yet, or the frame savers so I'm at the mercy of those who do here! :flag

The nerf bars that the brackets are welded to are steel, not aluminum. I suggest that you line up the brackets (without the wheels attached), mark the nerf bars, then drill the holes. The brackets may push up on the front bumper cover a bit, but that's not a problem. Bolt the brackets on without the wheels, then weld. It's a good idea to remove some paint at the weld joints first. A good welder, using a MIG system, can lay the beads down without damaging the bumper cover or anything else under the car.

I had them bolted in and welded. If you want to bolt them in, do that. But take them to a qualified welder and have him weld them on. They are going to be withstanding tremendous forces when they come in contact with the ground.

Cybercowboy, you can always come see mine if you want too!
