Battery Corrosion Problems
Am I the only one that has a continual issue with the negative battery cable connector corroding? I have tried cleaning it; using the felt pads; spraying the cable connections with a sealant; etc. but nothing seems to help.
Anyone have similar experiences? Is it my battery itself (Optima Red Top)? Maybe due to extra draw from my stereo or amplifier?
A corroded terminal is much like a cavity. The only sure-fix is to replace the connection. You can find them at any parts store but this will require some patience.
Before attaching it to the battery, spray some anti-corrosion on the battery terminal. You can also get this at most automotive stores. If you see the yellow foam turn to red, this indicates battery acid/corrosion. Keep applying and using a steel brush to remove the deposits until you don't see red.
If you install a new terminal AND clean the battery connection and still have reoccuring corrosion, you have a leak at the battery. Replace it.
Good luck
More than likely, the corrosion is inside the cable itself and no amount of cleaning will eliminate it. It'll continue to effect the terminal of whatever battery you use. You'll probably have to install a new cable.
