My OEM Delco shows no signs of the dreaded acid leakage so far; but I realize that I am pushing my luck and taking an unnecesary risk. I am about ready to purchase an Optima Redtop and I have a few questions for the Forum experts.
I have checked the application guide at my local Pep Boys and I note that the guide does not list the battery for a 1998 C5. What group is the correct battery? Will it fit into the stock mount without mods or "jury rigging"?
When a C5 battery is replaced, does the removal of power create any computer gremlins? Will I have DIC codes to overcome? Will the computer have to "relearn" anything? Do I have to do any manual reset procedures on key fobs, tire sensors, etc?
I have seen 9 volt battery things that plug into the cig lighter to maintain some power during battery replacements. Are these OK for the C5? Do they work?
As always I appreciate the help from Forum members.
Re: Optima Redtop Install - Special procedures? (BIGMAC2)
According to an Email I got from Optima the model to use in 97-02 Vettes is 34-78. A mount kit is available but you should be able to use the original hold down by trimming it to match the round shape of the battery . Can't help you with the other questions, but there should be no problems. Larry.

BIGMAC
I just swapped in a Yellow top and it was a piece of cake. The battery holder worked fine as it was and I had no problems with resets whatsoever. Everything stayed in memory including all the memory settings. I did have to reset the clock but that was it. My C5 is a 2000 coupe...

Put one in last week. No modifications required. Just snaps into place. I didn't even use the supplied adaptors that came with it. No error codes at all. Really easy to do. Good luck!
Re: Optima Redtop Install - Special procedures? (BIGMAC2)
Red Top from Pep Boys ($109) went right in without modifications and using the original hold down hardware. Like it was made for it.
I use one of those transformer power supplies that plug into the wall and supply power to computers or something. I have lots of them. Found one with an output of 12vdc 100ma, and figured it would be enough to save radio presets, etc. Soldered a cigarette lighter on the end of it. It is now my "Save the Settings" device for times I might have to disconnect the battery.
Beware, that a nine-volt battery or a transformer as described above will not have enough power to keep your presets AND operate the underhood light. So plug the device into your cigarette lighter, open the hood, wait for 10 minutes or so while the car "Times Out" that underhood light, then disconnect the battery.

Before you disconnect your battery, if you have the radio theft lock turned on (blinking red LED on radio panel), make sure you know the four digit code. Otherwise it's off to the dealer to get the radio working at your expense.

Thanks to the Forum members who responded to my post. I must be a predictor of dead OEM Delcos. When I sent my orginal post I was just concerned about leaking acid. Earlier today I went to fire her up- and the Delco was dead! Out went the POS OEM Delco- in went an Optima Redtop courtesy of Pep Boys. Thank the almighty for the Forum input; the idiot at Pep Boys had no idea what model was correct for the C5. As the members indicated, it went right in using the stock holddown. No codes- all I needed to do was set the clock and syncronize the key fobs. Thanks again!
