I have a 98 Corvette Convertible. The C Clip on the inside of the driver side mirror has come loose and the mirror is basically hanging there on its shaft.
Does anyone out there know how to remove the mirror itself in order to access the shaft inside for repair?
Happened to me on my driver side door last month and today my passenger side did the same :mad
There is no way to fix it. I put a screw in mine from the bottom of the mirror (the pice that is bolted to the door), It is easy to remove it from the door, just take of the inside of the door and you will find 3 nuts for the mirror. ;)
I just fixed mine this weekend. the dealership wanted 250.00 to replace the whole thing. I did it for 0.00.
First take the door panel off. There are writeups in here on how to do that. then you have to disconect the wiring, and unbolt the 3 bolts that hold the mirror on. depressing the spring is tricky, I used a bolt and nut. Put the bolt through the spring, and tighten the nut on the bolt till the spring is depressed and pop the oring aback on the shaft. then put it all back together. If you want to do it yourself, Email me and I'll give you explicit directions.
I'm [hugely] impressed that you were able to compress that spring. I considered trying it for a few minutes but being as I couldn't be certain that the post would engage the clip, decided not to even attempt it. If I would have had more time I really believe that cross-drilling the post and using a c-pin to retain the spring would be a serious improvement to the design.
