I have a modified 03 Z06 that I am swapping the clutch & flywheel out of & replacing with a Spec 3+ clutch & steel flywheel. I'm told the steel flywheel weighs about 21 pounds & that I will feel a noticeable difference in acceleration/responsiveness in the vehicle. What is the weight of the stock flywheel & clutch? I'm a cam-only car (232/236 .595/.602 114 LSA) on LG headers, no cats, corsa exhaust & Vararam intake, with a very good tune. Putting down 425rwhp/385rwtq right now. Any opinions on the difference I should expect? Weight figures? Thanks.
Lightened flywheels only require a slightly different 'take-off' from a light. Just a tad bit more RPM. After a week or two, you won't even notice you're doing it. I had a couple of cars (not vettes) that I did that in. The motor does rev faster, and that's what you're looking for. The "mass" of the heavier flywheel helps keep the motor from bogging down at take-off.
I know that this might be a really dumb question but would a lighter flywheel in an a4 make any difference at all or does it just help if you have a m6?
^ Automatics don't have a flywheel... they have a flex plate.
I have a LUK stage II w/ a Fidanza aluminum flywheel. It weights 14lbs vs. the 25 for the stocker. Noticeable difference in acceleration.... no i ssues w/ street driving as far as take off at all. Even when driving my father's stock clutched '04 Z-16 back to back.
The car does shimmy at idle a little more due to less rotating mass.
