I have a 2000 MN6 coupe. I only have one fob and it has always worked. Recently, it stopped working so I replaced the battery. It still didn't work. So I checked the owner's manual and reprogrammed it. It worled fine. About an hour later, it stopped again. Now I have to reprogram it just about everytime I use it. Now it loses the code within a matter of minutes?? Any ideas? Thanks.
If you've already performed the "Learn Key Fob" procedure, then give the resynchronize procedure a try. It's quick and easy. While sitting in your car or standing near with your key fob, press and hold the Lock & Unlock buttons simultaneously. Hold them for a 7-count until your horn toots. Your key fob has just ben resynched and that may fix your problem. If you have to continue to reprogram (resynch) then you might consider a new FOB.
Could be the FOB itself. The FOB on my car had similar symptoms. I thought it was the batt, changed it. It worked then stopped working, then started double clicking every function. I thought it may have been the receiver. I bit the bullet and ordered a new FOB ($90) and reprogrammed it. Now, the new FOB works 100% of the time.
If the FOB is original, it is almost 7 years old now. I'd speculate it is the FOB itself.
Both my fobs went south. First they lose sync and can be resynched by holding lock and unlock at the same time for over 7 seconds till the horn beeps. If they KEEP LOSIING SYNC with NEW BATTERTIES, time for now fobs. Got some on fleebay for abt $50 or $60 each. You need to get them with FCCID AB00216T. (97-99) passive fobs will WORK on a 2000 without the passive fn(PITA ANYWAY) or a 2000 fob will work,
LATER FOBS WILL NOT WORK. Make sure you get FCCID AB00216T and that the seller WILL TAKE BACK A FOB THAT WON'T PROGRAM OR HOLD ITS SYNC. BIGHANK
Is the battery in the FOB loose? I had that problem when I changed my battery once. The little clamp that holds the battery worked loose.
Kvozel has it right. The fob battery contacts don't put enough pressure on the battery. When you bump the fob, the battery momentarily loses contact - ergo must resync.
Carefully pry the contacts so they put more pressure on the battery. Bet this solves the problem. I haven't had a problem in 5 years.
Possible solution:
My fob had been misbehaving for a couple of weeks. I'd reprogram it and it would work for an hour or two and stop. I did this over and over again I changed batteries, I cleaned the contact points with a Q-tip and alcohol, and I checked all the advice on the forum . One gentlemen showed a picture and said to cut the lead going to the bell shaped device (I think it might be the antenna) on the printed circuit board. I noticed, that on my circuit board, the solder on the underside of the bell shaped device had broken. I simply stuffed a little bit of foam on top of the bell and closed the cover. I reprogrammed it and it's worked fine for the past two weeks. You might give that a try. It's a lot cheaper than buying a new fob. I would re-solder it if there was more space to work with, but I'm afraid of damaging the fob now that it is working.
Many times the fob just goes bad. I assume the chip is damaged somehow. I fix the machines that make microchips for a living. So I tried to fix my last bad fob....everything from soldering a new battery in to cleaning every part of the pcb. Nothing worked, just replace it. You can order a new one for about $90. Trust me just get a new one and it will work every time.
2000 is a special fob for only that year.
