Default Fuel Gauge Sending Unit

Hey!

I've got the dreaded fuel gauge problem. It's been going on since I bought the car. I've done the Techron Fuel system cleaner, I buy only Chevron supreme fuel... It hasn't really solved the problem. This car sat for about 18 months without much driving- so whatever fuel level it was at during this storage time is likely where the deposits have formed on the resistor associated with the fuel gauge sending unit.

As soon as the gauge gets to the 3/4 full mark, the gauge goes to zero. After some additional driving - the gauge comes back to life a little over half a tank. This isn't the end of the world - but that constant Check Gauges and dinging drives me nuts.

So - I want to get to the tank and pull the sending unit and clean it up with a little carb cleaner and a toothbrush.

Since this problem happens with the first half of the tank - I assume this is the sending unit associated with the passenger side fuel tank.

How do I get to the fuel tank? Are there any photos/diagrams showing where the heck it even is?

Thanks

here's a pic of the tanks

I've swapped a few pumps, once the gas is drained, it's not too bad, just a bit tricky removed the pump/sender assy from the tank

brake cleaner and a contact swab has fixed quite a few gages

I would invest in a shop manual for your car from GM(contact Gene Culley)

note these pics are typical for a 97-mid 03 , the FFS system introduced in mid '03 has the pump/sender on the top of tank, requiring tank removal
