My '01 C5 lost all forward gears today (son called me and told me). It shifts into reverse, however just acts as though its in neutral when dropping it into drive, 3, 2, and 1. Happened when entering the highway. Worked great up to that point. Any ideas? Could this be electronic?
Thx, G-Man
u maybe low on fluid ,have u checked the fluid? If not u are gonna have to jack the rear end up get it on some jack stands theres no dipstick tube theres a plug thatyour gonna have to screw outthe tranny fluid should pour out if not add some until it pours out or u could get a rollback & have them tow it to the dealer & let them do it .It very well maybe running low on fluid .I would check that out before spending 2k on a tranny,If anyone knows a better way to check tranny fluid on an a4 please chime in
Thx. I hope not though. The car has 28k and showed no signs of tranny failure like slippage, erratic shifting, burnt fluid, etc.
That's awfully low mileage for a tranny to need to be rebuilt unless its been abused . Check the fluids first then have a trusted mechanic take a look at it and hope for the best.
Just got back to Dallas from Florida. I'll be checking the DIC for codes in a bit and also trans fluid level. I've started the car and I do feel it go into gear however no movement in any forward gears. Reverse is OK. I'll post something if I find it. Thx.

1. No mechanical issues such as cables off, vacuum hoses, etc.
2. No codes to read regarding the PCM or anything else power train related
3. Fluid level is OK and the fluid is clean and red, not burnt

Looks like it is off to the transmission shop!

Just to be sure:
You checked the fluid level by running the engine until the trans temp was between 85 and 125 degrees and then you pulled the plug on the side of the pan (with the engine still running) and found the fluid level was even with the the bottom of the hole?
The only reason I ask that is it sounds strange that your fluid is clean, unburnt and only had 28,000 miles on it.
My tranny was toast with low mileage but my fluid was burnt.
I've had a friend at the trans shop look at it. The consensus is that the forward gear planetary is broke. RPM Transmissions (a CF sponsor) has confirmed this on e-mail. The engine/trans combo is good, but when running the car hard the trans is the weaker link.
