It may be possible for some laser to penetrate the tint, but your detection range range will be greatly reduced. In order to have the most effective use of your laser detection, it needs as clear a glass as possible.
I have my detector mounted to my rear view mirror also. It is mounted in such a manner that it "looks" out the windshield through the clear portion of the glass, not the tint. Main reason for that is I wanted it to have an unobstructed look out the rear window too. (Using Valentine1)
Laser detection is pretty much of a moot point anyway as far as I'm concerned. I rely on my detector for radar and radar only. For laser use I have had excellent results with an Escort Laser Shifter. It has "helped" me on three different occasions.

good to know!
I also have 15% tint on the sides and rear and it picked it up a few times.
I rely on it mostly for radar too (escort 8500) I figure if I'm doing something wrong and got hit with the laser, it was too late anyway.

Not necessarily so. Take a look at Escort's Laser Shifter or the Blinder line of products. With them, you have a fighting chance against laser. As I indicated, my Laser Shifter has proven effective on 3 separate occasions for me.
This is a test you can do to check out your window film; use your garage door opener....find max distance you can open your door while shooting through the window film in question, then move just beyond that point so the door will not open(note distance). Then move the opener outside of the window film and retest. If the distance is the same....you are good to go, if not, you are loosing signal through the film.
(this test was told to me by the Val 1 people several years ago when I purchased my detector)

Unless this is done with a "laser" garage door opener, this "test" is invalid. Garage door openers that I'm aware of use radio frequency waves, not laser. Window tint is invisible to RF.

Correction ........If the window tent is of a metal reflective type , it will most definitely have an effect on RF Waves (Radar, Garage door openers, ect.). This is why the test, as stated before, will determine if metal is present in the window film .
