I am having a problem with the outside temperature sensor (2000 coupe). Sometimes it works fine, but other times the detected temperature is too low (10+ degrees), which makes automatic HVAC operation useless. Is it possible that the sensor head needs to be cleaned, or should it just be replaced? I noticed that the sensor is only $10 in Vette catalogs, but I am afraid that replacing it might be tricky. Where is the sensor located and is it easy to replace?
I have not replaced it myself but it is located by the front air dam below the radiator. It looks like a small black stick about the diameter of a pencil and maybe an 1 1/2" or so long. It doesn't seem like it should be hard to replace but as I said I haven't done the job yet.
It can easily be accessed from the top, by raising the hood and pulling the mounting plastic clip at the connector out of the frame. Then disconnect the plug and replace. Easy, but it may not fix your problem. Cheapest thing to try though. Remember that it won't update the reading until you have driven for a certain period of time over a certain speed. I don't remember right off, but it's in the owner's manual. Here's a picture.
Thanks, G5GGvert! It seems easy enough to replace. But I will check the manual first to see how long it's supposed to take before getting a new temperature reading (after starting the car, I presume). How inconvenient!
I have a similar problem except mine is intermittent and the temp. will be way off low, 32 degrees on a 80 degree day. Does anyone have any thoughts on maybe another ground problem?
