A friend of mine has a 2001 A4 Coupe that for some unexplained reason will brake without any pedal input. I know he's got codes but he has not pulled them up yet but for sure he getting the "active handling" message. He had it towed to the stealership where they said the incorrect brake fluid had been used and all of the rubber components in the system would have to be replaced?????? At a cost of $4,000 no less. Sounds odd to me as I told him if the rubber had failed he'd have leaking seals, etc. which he doesn't. To me it sounds like a defective sensor or sensor connection on one of the wheels or a computer problem sending an erroneous command but I am by no means an expert.
your gonna have to pull up some codes for anyone to be able to help you with this situation, If he has allready taken it to the dealer ,I would go get it back from the dealer, Put it out in my back yard & start pulling codes .then u can come back to the forum & get a list of codes from the dic & do a diagnosis on it
Has your friend been to "Quickie Lube" lately? One of my buddies had his new van at one of them for an oil change, and the thoughtful, efficient techs there "topped up " his master cylinder....
WITH MOTOR OIL.
His wife lost the brakes completely, went sailing thru an intersection.
Lines needed flushing, all the rubber components had to be replaced.
After a year of hassle, QL paid up..... over $ 3,000.
I don't remember him saying the brakes stayed ON, but I reckon it's possible if rubber frags plug up return or equalizer ports.
If the above turns out to be the case, your buddy better worry about the tranny, too.

He's got it back from the dealer - I'll get his trouble codes and post later.
Update: went over to my friends house.. Checked codes and there are none. When the car is driven it's ok for a few blocks then it feels like the brakes start dragging. Turned AH/TC off and no change. Funny thing the brake fluid cap rubber gasket is way oversize now - like it swollen and it won't fit because it's too large. If someone put DOT 5 fluid in by mistake could that cause the master cylinder to act up? I found no leaks anywhere however.
