Will have a white label on top DXB will be written on it in big black letters. Will also have one extra sensor on it. If it doesnt have a label. use a skinny screwdriver place it in the bar that comes out the front (shifting mechanism). The hole in this bar is also slightly larger than that of an mn-6. Then shift the tranny into first gear. I think its all the way clockwise when looking at it and push in. Now mark the output shaft ( shaft that would connect to rear end) and input shaft ( shaft on same side as shifting mechanism). It should almost be exactly 3 turns of the input shaft to make 1 turn on output shaft. Hope this helps.

Physically? Not for sure... The only thing I could think of is to run the VIN # by a dealer and make sure the build sheet says MN12.

Is it installed in the car, or removed from the vehicle ??

There should be a metal tag attached to one of the case bolts. See what number is on the tag:

LS1 MM6 015, 019, 023
LS6 MM12 025

Thanks for the response, I'm buying a used transmission for my 2002 z06 and would like to make sure it is the correct transmission.

Hope these pics of my Z trans help. As stated above they have a temp sensor in the drain/fill hole, but it could have been swaped for a plug by a non-Z owner.

Another way to tell is that Z06 transmissions have a temperature sensor in them and the others do not.

If you have it in the vehicle look in the glove box, will see M12 designation.

Other signs are temp sensor in the fill hole. Other check would be to put it in first gear, turn front shaft, rear should turn approximately 3 times, a MN6 will turn a little over 2.5.
