my bro needs more help with his new 98. this is now happening on a daily basis... when you start the car and put it in gear it dies. then the message comes up " remove key and wait 10 seconds". if you don't wait the 10 seconds the car starts right up. it just dies when you put it in gear. if you do what it says "remove key and wait 10 seconds" everything works just fine. what could be causing this and how does he fix the problem? he doesn't want it to get to the point where he gets stranded somewhere. thanks in advance!!!
Does he have another key he can try. Sounds like it's not reading the security chip in the key. If that's not it, the reader in the ignition switch could be bad. First thing I'd try is cleaning the contacts on the key resistor with alcohol, then I'd try another key.

Some members standard answer to any question about remove key issues is column lock. While they are associated, do the easy things first and try the key. It might be a security issue with the resistance in the key being read incorrectly. Only takes a few seconds to try if you have a spare key, or clean your old one. If it doesn't work, continue from there.
I've installed the column lock bypass and I'm still getting the 10 sec key message and the service column lock message. I've cleaned the key to death and I'm not sure what to do now. It wasn't doing it until I pulled the battery and replaced it.

Have you pulled the BCM fuses mentioned in the instructions from CoH?

Not since I pulled the battery out and replaced it. Is that the fix for all these messages I'm getting now? Which are they and what's the procedure?
Edit. . .
Found my instructions and pulled fuses 25 & 29, waited a couple minutes, replaced them and I'm still getting both messages. I'm thinking that even though it's starting the car just fine this battery is on its way out.

Replace the battery..couldnt hurt... You pulled the fuses out of the box on the interior of the car by the passengers feet yes?

I had the same issue on my 98 a couple of years ago. I bought the aftermarket CLB and it didn't work either. I found out they don't work on all 98's. I took the car down to the dealership and they performed the factory recall and now, no more problems. Good luck with it.

This car had been working with the CLB installed for several months so I'm not totally sure what its problem is now. Maybe it just doesn't like the cold weather we're having.

I recall there is something about a "K-Harness" that needs to be replaced even if you go with an aftermarket CLB. You might check with your dealer and see if that has gone bad. Other than that, I don't know. Good luck.

was the recall on the column lock bypass or something else???

No, the factory recall was on the column lock problem. The aftermarket bypass is supposed to get around the problem, but it doesn't work on all 98's. The fix for me was getting the K-Harness installed at the dealership.

Funny, I had to put in a CLB AFTER the latest recall which installed the "K" harness...

Ah, but you my friend have a 6 speed tranny, mine is an automatic. I don't know anything for sure, only just what happened with my car. Electrical problems are the most frustrating problem to fix. I sometimes wish these cars weren't so complicated, but then they wouldn't be so much fun to drive.

The other thing done in the latest recall was taking out the locking plate in the steering column so the wheel never locks up...guess its good to know I can at least steer the car if it happens...downside is its easier to steal the car though...

This is true and as you know, if someone wants it bad enough, there is nothing that is going to stop them.
