Default Oil Consumption

As a recent owner of a 2001 C5 with 20K miles, I'm suprised to find out it consumes a qt of oil about every 1,000 miles. Is this typical? (Stupid question probably to you old timers, but I don't know who else to ask.)

These LS1 engines are notorious for oil being sucked up through the PCV system---If you ever looked inside the manifold of one you would be shocked to see how much oil is in there--If you picked up the manifold and let it hang--oil would literally pour out of the manifold or drip heavily---Most people that have this problem do a couple things--The 2 fixes are 1) to install a LS6 pcv valley and pcv system--Cost I think was about $75 in parts--2) would be to ad an oil "catch can " on the pcv system--cost for an AMW can about $160 parts---You can do a search and several threads will come up--type in Catch can and the LS6 valley or PCV---I did both to mine --it helped alot--still a little oil in the manifold--but not bad and now I never have to add any oil in between changes--

No, it's not typical. My '00 was eating oil at the rate of one quart every 1200 miles - was diagnosed with bad #2 rings. The dealer replaced the rings under warranty back in 2001 and so far, no oil consumption since. The '01 (6 speed in particular) was known for this problem.

Common problem on some 2001 and 2002's. GM decided to use rings with less tension to get better gas milage. A quart every 1K miles is a hell of a lot cheaper than tearing out the motor to replace the rings.

I would just check the oil each time you fill up.
