Default TPS on a Z06

Posted in C6 by mistake so here it is:

I read all the posts I could find but none related to this specifically:

I would like to add TPS to my Z but since they don't come standard I'm unsure of what sensors will work (if any) and what is involved in programming.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? (even if it's just a link to a thread for me to read)...

I'd appreciate it.

thanks,
Mike

Mike,
you want the factory TPS found in the 2001 and newer coupes and convertibles. They will fit perfectly in your Z06 wheels. Best bet $$wise will probably be to buy them from Fichtner or Beans (forum dealers). If you buy used make sure they are relatively new insofar as when they were made - they are battery powered and good for about 7 years max.
You will need access to a Tech II (diagnostic tool which, for example, your dealer will have) to activate the system on your Z. The dealer will have absolutely no idea that this can be done, or how to do it. I think the instructions are in the C5 tech tips here on the forum, or else at the www.stopforce.com/RPO.html website. If I'm wrong, someone will chime in. Print out these instructions and take them with you to the dealer. It will take 5-10 minutes maximum to do this, probably closer to 5, so (if you go to a dealer) don't let the dealer BS you and try to charge you big bucks. Tell him you'll pay pro rata his hourly labor rate - shouldn't end up costing you more than 10 bucks that way .
Once your car's BCM system is activated to read TPS, you will need to train the sensors. They are location specific. The easiest way to do this is before you install them in the wheels. There is a how-to for this also - off the top of my head I can't point you in the right direction. Try a search here or this link: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...26&forum_id=49 - it's been discussed many times. Do it in your car, one by one. Just keep track of where they are to be installed (i.e. LR, RR, LF, RF). When I did mine I put them in separate baggies with a slip of paper identifying which wheel it went to. Then off to my tire guy to install the sensors on the wheels. I put a thin smear of silicone grease on the rubber seals on the TPS stems before seating them in the rim. Tighten the lock nuts and you should be in business. Good luck.

Excellent info!

The only thing I might add would be to put one drop of Loc-Tite blue on the threads of the valve stem and to ensure not to over-tighten the valve stem nuts (aluminum). For valve stems that are already tightened down, you can use Loc-Tite green which will wick into the threads. A lot of guys, me included, have had valve stem nuts gradually loosen over time causing slow leaks. I hate loose nuts!

HTH,
Robert

You need the 01-04 style sensors.

Part # is 25731358 for the sensor, and part # 25708165 for the mounting nut. You'll need 4 of each. This late style sensor comes with reusable rubber seals attached, and do not use O-rings like the older style sensors did.

To enable the TPM system in your Z06 with a Tech II, have your mechanic follow these directions (look halfway down the page for the TPM part):

There may have been a part # change in the past few years. I got that # off the receipt back when I ordered a set about 4 years ago.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in with this info...

Thanks especially to LoneStar for the awesome write up...

Funny how the C5 guys want Z06 stuff (wheels, exhaust, etc) and Z06 guys want what you guys have...

When I owned my 03 Z I added the sensors. Parts and labor came to about $360. Dealer wil use his Tech II device to turn on the feature and the use a magnet to "set" each wheel sensor location.

Good luck
