Default Z06 gone wild... electrical???

I need some help with this one. I drove my car to work this morning, no problems at all. When I started it up to go home it IMMEDIATELY showed, Service Active Handling, then Service Traction System (I don't remember the exact wording for that one), and Service ABS. I turned it off and started it a couple of times and got it every time. I drove home, about 15 miles, shut it off and started it again with no warnings. What would cause this, and is it something that will probably keep happening or get worse?? Any help is appreciated.

update... went out this morning and turned the key to on. Didn't try to start it and instantly the warnings came on. Started it for about 2 minutes. Turned it off, started again with no warnings at all. My car is losing it's mind!

Default it's the grounds

this is a common thing that happens with the C5... our grounds are poorly engineered... go through and read Bill Curlee's electrical thread and then go through and clean your grounds and also add inn a bit of dielectric grease. Then hopefully you'll never see those signs on the DIC again, worked for me!

HTH,

Thomas

What codes are you getting? If a C1214 shows up you are most likely looking at replacing the EBCM. But it's a lot cheaper to go through and check all the grounds first.

I went through the exact same thing, cleaned all of my grounds with no success - the second I put a used EBCM in the problems went away...

Thanks for the help guys. I am going to go through my grounds and see what I find. Is there a specific ground that would cause it to throw these warnings (and no others) randomly? I drove the car all day yesterday. About 200 miles and at least 10-12 starts with no problems so it does sound like a bad contact somewhere could have been the culprit.

Pull your codes and do a search based on them. My did the same thing. Code one day nothing the next. Then two weeks into it failed and never went off again until I changed the ECBM. But it can be caused by many things. Wheel sensors, EBCM, Grounds are the most common.

Before you freak.. Check to make sure you have sufficient battery voltage.. My bet is your battery is on the way out.. When our cars get low voltage they act like HAL in 2001 Space Odessey

I thought my car was possesed one day...Low battery... it was clicking and ticking and firing error codes everywhere...

The fact that after you drove it for a while, tried again and the problem went away.. make me very suspicious of the battery..YOu most likely charged it up.

By the way.. just because it seems fine after a charge does not mean it's not dying.. the fact that it did it again first thing in the morning is even more evidence...

You have options to consider when it comes to replacing the EBCM -

1 - Find somebody that will sell or give you their bad EBCM. Send that into the eBay company that rebuilds them for $350 and have a 3 year warranty on the thing. Replace the broken with the rebuilt and then you have a dead one to pass on to the next guy for the same purposes.

2 - Find somebody that has a used working unit for sale and replace it yourself. Cost is going to be anywhere between 200 and 400, and you have no warranty.

3 - Send yours in and have it rebuilt, then replace when it gets back to you. This way you have to wait to drive the car until the EBCM is back and installed.

4 - Order a new one and install yourself - going to be expensive ~$700.

5 - Go to the dealer and get it replaced - going to be really expensive ~$1,000. If they quote you the brake contoller in addition to the EBCM youre going to be wondering how it's legal to violate you like that without buying you dinner and a movie first...

6 - replace the battery first, if it fixes the problem you are all good - if not start back at choosing one of the above approaches, with a brand new battery of course...

I was out in the ocean for a couple of days with the Navy so my troubleshooting had to take a little break...
I can't find anything wrong with the battery or charging system and now it alarms every time I start the car. EBCM seems to be about the only thing left.

You should check with your GM dealer before you buy a new ebcm. From reading other posts on this same problem it seems many dealers are now replacing these on low mileage Vettes under what they call a "Goodwill Policy". Be worth a phone call any way...

What ended up being the resolution here?

I recently had my coupe do some strange things. The DIC was giving me all sorts of warnings ( low fuel, loss of power, flat tire, etc.) and the gauges were squirelly.

It turned out to be a worn wiring harness in the drivers door that caused a short to ground. I'm not suggesting this is your problem but it could definitely be a grounding issue or short. My service guy said that any kind of short or ground problem makes the electronics in these cars go nuts.

It may require a dealer's or good service tech's help to isolate the issue.
