How difficult is it to replace an ignition switch? What do you have to do to gain access to it. Anyone done it? Anyone have any pictures they care to post?
Simple procedue....took me about 40 min and $119 to do it myself. While the dealers wanted at least a full day and $400 - $500. Just buy the ignition switch/lock ($100) from the parts dept and then take it to your local locksmith (GM will charge much much more) to have them put it together and code the tumblers ($19 and 30 minutes). Pretty easy to take apart the console/dash once you get going. only about 40 minutes apart and then back together.
Since 3G shows no photos and the lock is only partially shown in some of the other photos I presume that the mounting method for the lock cylinder is evident at the 3G disassambly point? It appears in some of the other photos shown later that there is some type of two bolt cage that retains the cylinder in place? Thank you for the information it has been very helpful.

Thank you for your advice. I know a locksmith that I'm sure can do it for me. As I asked in the response I made to the preivous post. Is there just a couple of bolts that retain the lock cylinder after I get the trim panel removed from the face of the dash? Thanks!
The book says to remove all eletrical connections. Pry off the face plate. If you have an A/T you have to remove the park/lock cable as follows;
Disconnect the park/lock cable (A/T) from the ignition switch.
Insert the key into the ignition switch, then turn the ignition to ON.
Using a flat bladed screwdriver or other suitable tool, depress the park/lock cable retaining tab (located on the underside of the switch near the base of the cable).
Pull to remove the cable.
Then remove the two retaining bolts and that's it!
