1st - your wife wants to buy you tool?? Does she have a sister?

I picked up a 180pc mechanics tool set off ebay years ago. It's served me well. If you don't have a lot of tools now, i'd start with something like this

you need both metric and standard stuff, that set should get you through 80% of the basic maintenance jobs and you'll just have to pick up occasional sockets and tools for some of the odd fasteners (T-47 for the seatbelts for example)

look here for more options depending on your budget

Great set, what I have. The red plastic drawers will come out of that, and you can drop two length ways into the medium height drawers on most small tool chests, PERFECT.
Things I got after that right off the top:
Torx head socket set
Fuel line disconnect set
Gear-rachet box and open end (std and metric)

Enjoy!

Here is what I keep in the car. I'd suggest starting with a nice small Craftsman (or Mac or Snap-On) set, and add a little every month. You'll need a tool box also.

4 way screwdriver
Offset screwdriver
Large screwdriver (common)
Pry bar
Torx bits
¾ socket set (SAE & Metric)
Hammer
Zip ties
Tape
Tire gauge
Flashlight
Tire patch kit
Channel locks
Pliers
Needle nose
Vice grips
Wire cutters
Wrenches
Jumper cables
Rags
Allen wrench set
Knife
Spare belt
WD-40
Window cleaner
Cleaner
Gloves
Oil
Zip lock bags
Wool blanket
$20.00

I bought a Sears 155 piece metric & SAE set for $99.00 that comes in a small suitcase type plastic container. Very complete and portable.

The 155 pc is a good start, rule of thumb: you will never have enough tools..

I would get this set right here.http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...cemldffidfni.0
I have it and it has everything you could need as far as normal tools go for emergency or normal repair.
