Is the recent C5 auto much better than the prior generation 4L60E??
I'm concerned that pushing it around a little will result in the loss of downshift ability which happened in my '96 Camaro.

Yes, from what I've read the C5 Is a better tranny. If I went with an auto I would go with a 01+ with the 3.15 gears because the torque comes on at 4000 vs 4400 It has 5 hp and 10lb ft more too. Not much on paper but the 01+ auto seems to run a couple of 10ths faster In the quarter than the pre 01's with the same gears.
I love the manual though....If I did choose the auto I would want the most power since Its the auto and not a manual...thats just me
I also heard from "those" in the know that the A4 (4L60E) wasn't a very strong tranny. Having said that, my 2002 thats Magnuson equiped has been getting flogged now for 3 years and 21K miles with no signs of wear or tear. Trans fluid is synthetic and cooled with a large cooler. Fluids been changed twice now, at 9K and just recently with a clean pan, no particals or debris in the pan and fluid smells close to fresh fluid. I run 11 X 19 rears with the new second gen 06 runflats.
What kills a 4l60E faster than anything is high stall convertors and heat,
plus large sticky tires. Got to know your limitations; of course a genius tuner can make the A4 live a long time.
