Default External Temp stuck at 69*F

Just brought my ZO6 home yesterday, drove the car for about 35 minutes and external temp. did not change at all. The car was definitely running/driven for long enough to get an update but the temp. did not move. Anyone have any suggestions on where to look first please? I have an extended warranty so I'm not too concerned, if I can't fix it myself I will bring it in for service in the spring.
Thanks

I believe I read somewhere that 69 is the default temp if the sensor is bad or disconnected

Default Amb Air Senor

You can get replacement probe from Gene http://www.gmpartshouse.com/

Part #10248414
Cost -$5.42

Replacement is simple Front Passenger Side on rail between headlight and radiator...

Found this in another thread " Disconnect the sensor. You should get DTC B0333 Outside Air Temp Sensor Open, and the temp display should default to 56*F. This would tell you that there are no shorts in the wiring harness/connector.
Short the sensor connector - this won't blow anything. You should get DTC B0332 Outside Air Temp Sensor Short to Ground, and the temp display should default to 56*F. This will confirm that there are no random impedances in the circuit.
Measure the impedance of the sensor itself. At 68*F, it should measure 12,493 ohms. At 86*F/8,056 ohms, 104*F/5327 ohms. That should be enough to verify it's within its expected range.

If you're still having a problem, then the only other possibility is the HVAC unit has a problem internally where the sensor impedance is used in conjunction with it's reference circuit. The reference circuit consists of a 5V voltage and a reference resistor. I can't see how it could be this though.

Also remember that the display will not update if the car was started less than 3 hours ago. You need to drive it above 20 MPH of 90 seconds or above 45 MPH for 60 seconds. "

Just jiggle the wire and make sure it's connected right. Mine did this about 8,000 miles ago and has been working fine since.

Or:
Maybe KITT has reincarnated himself into your car and is trying to tell you something......

KITT wouldn't be the one I want telling me that!! I will try a new sensor and see if that does the trick then look further if it doesn't.

My OAT has been 69 as long as I have had my car. I did not know where the sensor was, but after reading this I went to look in the right frame rail, and there was just a connecter hanging there. I will go get a sensor and see if the outside air temp works.

Check the connection to the sensor (down on the passenger side of the radiator shroud under the front fascia). If it is connected OK, probably a bad sensor. Easy and check to replace.

They may have changed this... but when my 00 had the sensor unplugged - the reading was 69 but i could not put on my ac... for like the defroster or whatever - even in manual mode it would not put it on??? at least from what i remember.

Point being - dont let it go - get it fixed or you will be wishing you did if you get in a foggy situation (on the windshield that is)

Personally, I don't mind having 69. That's a GREAT number!

I can't find my sensor or the connector even. I'll have to take the radiator shroud off so I can get in there better.

You don't need to take anything off. You can reach down through the top with the hood up and disconnect it or just pull the plastic mount pin out of the hole and lift it up to reach it. Or you can reach up underneath. Look at the picture I posted earlier. It's in sight under the front by the skid rail.

That's what I mean, there is nothing there-no wires, no connector, no sensor...no nothing.

Don't know why, if you are getting the outside temp display, it's in there somewhere. Look for a wire bundle with a black plastic cord around it in the area of the horn. It normally mounts on top of the frame, but it has a long enough wire on it to reach a couple of feet. Scrounge around, I bet it's in there. There's a small hole in the top of the frame (see picture) that the mount pin pushes into if you find it. It sure sounds like your sensor is missing or disconnected. (or defective)

Finally had warm enough weather to look into this again. Found the sensor with the plug having one wire ripped out. Fixed the wire and now I have a correct temperature reading.

posting here as a bookmark - mine appears to be stuck on 49 degrees - so I'll try the diagnostic tests suggested.
