Re: Removing Screen Did It hurt or Help (leanhtuan)
'01 MN6 w/Vortex/GMS MAF 5%/LAPD HF duct&coupler.
With the regular GMS MAF, I ran lean above 5K. The 5% rich MAF covers me now, and for a few more lean mods. Nice in the summer heat as CYA.
I do surge mildly between 1500-2000 "super" light on the gas going downhill. No big deal for the increased flow (the GMS '01 LS1/LS6 MAF is a stocker ported slightly with no screen and no airfoil).
So, some report a loss in torque and power, but to date no clear back to back evidence has been produced. Reality, is more air+more gas in tend to equal more power.
On your stock MAF, you could lean out (01's and 02's run leaner from factory though). With a air filter mod, even more so. Be careful...
Ok here are some facts..... I took out the screen on my 99 FRC when on the dyno, and picked up 8 rwhp! I took my girlfriends 00' WS6 to be dynoed as well, it picked up 9rwhp with the screen removed! These runs were made the same day and temp... the cars were brought up to temp before each run too!! Thems the facts! Take a look at my times below, also look at my mods... It works!
Sounds to me like it's not worth the effort, considering the seemingly random and inconsistent improvements reported, possible problems, and PITA factor. :flag
Re: Removing Screen Did It hurt or Help (MDL-01C5)
It is interesting to see that before engines had "Diagnostic Executive" (G.Ms name for PCM functions), that performance bound car owners had timing lights, dwell meters, different sized carb jets, etc, adjusted and tuned their engines to obtain best performance for the mods they added but for some unknown reason to me, refuse to do the same to tune todays designed engines.
What you call a PCM is not to assure top performance, but to assure meeting EPA/CARB/API, or CAFE rules, not to be an invisible performance tuner to any mods that are thrown into the mix of the engine makeup.
A simple process of removing a MAF screen can be a positive or negative depending on if your wiling to tune in for the changes resulting from removing that screen. Clearly when the weather gets colder, we see a suden rash of woners saying how much better their engine is performing, thus that points to a lean condition and in removing the screen would increase the leanness along with increasing ping/knock that reduces perofrmance timing.
So when people continue to shoot in the dark with out using a scanner/monitor, they go out and pay for some modified MAF with X percent change to AFR and then wonder why sometimes the engine performs good/bad. Maybe that mod works well in colder weather but sucks in the summer weather could be a year round performer it the car owner did a simple tune in of those mods.
I'd say if your not wiling to tune/tweak in those mods, keep your hands out of the engine bay and live with how the engine performs with all stock parts.
