I have a 2002 C5 It has 11000 miles. When the engine first starts it sounds like a lifter for about a minute. The dealership said it was piston slap and all 2002's have it. Does any one recognize this?

2002 isnt the only year that the LS6/LS1 based engines have cold start knock. My 2000 Camaro has, my 01 Z has it, My 04 Silverado SS has it.
It is normal and goes away once it warms up.
correct answer!!!! by product of a very small piston skirt. the air pump makes a odd thud, thud type knocking sound on start up also for a brief moment.
My 04 has it. Some use the word "normal", I believe it's not normal, but more "common" than anything. It's a damn shame too. My car doesn't burn/use any oil between oil changes and turns in great fuel economy, but it's this damn knocking noise while stone cold that bugs the hell out of me. I'm in the market for a new pickup. GM would have been at the top of my list, but with Toyota offering a new 5.7, 381hp/ 400ft torque in the new Tundra, I'm confident that Toyota knows how to build a V8 that makes ALL of the RIGHT noises.
No worries, my 02 does it too. It is the dreaded piston slap. Sometimes sounds like a diesel during warm up. My understanding was the piston skirt was undersized just a bit to allow for expansion however the wrist pin was angle a bit as well causing the slapping noise until it warms up and expands. I heard some still have this problem and have 100K? So now worries, just run it easy during warm up and whatever you do, don't panic and trade it in for a Toyota.
