I believe the HUD windshield has a higher reflective quality for the inside. Hence the high replacement cost. But I understand a standard windshield will work with a HUD also.

yes, you can use the standard windshield.

But there is a difference between the two. The "HUD" windshield has an "anti-parallax" layer between the two glass layers that helps reduce a slight ghosting outline of the image. This "anti-parallax" layer has little to do with illumination... and everything to do with making a more crisp display of the projection.

I installed a HUD and I have ghosting (BIG TIME) on the standard windshield. I am only assuming it's the windshild that is causing it.

WOW !!! my 2002 isn't anything like that (non-HUD built car). I wonder if at some point in C5 production that all C5's got the HUD windshield ???

I have noticed at when I wash the inside of my windshield that right above where the HUD is located the window dips in slightly, perhaps it changes the angle slightly to make it easier to read from the drivers seat?
