Default Help me pick a converter

I have a 04 Coup that I have put 3.42 gears and a mild cam in. It's time for the next mod a stall converter. Which would you suggest?

Just wondering why you didn't change the torque converter at the same time you did the rear gear change?

I should have but I didn't think I would like driving with a stall converter but after doing alot of reading I'm ready to give it a try.

have 2000 vette with 3.42's, headers and Yank SS3600 conv. Heads and cam soon. The SS3600 rides like a daily driver with ease (my wife drives it all the time and is fine with it) but has given me a 12.37 in the 1/4 mile.

Very happy with my SS3600. Fits my driving style, current and future planned mods.

Whatever you do, don't bother with the stealth converter.

Hey guy, how ya doin?

I had 3.73's w/ a Yank SS3200 stall, Dynatech Supermaxx headers, and the car handled like stock - my wife couldn't even tell that it wasn't stock

as you know, I'm finishing adding G5X3 Cam and AFR 205 heads, w/ a few other minor accompanying parts

Anyway, I'm very happy w/ my 3.73's and the SS3200 stall - IF I was going to do it over again, I think I'd probably go w/ the SS3600 stall, just to give me a little more on take off - not that I need it, since I can't put power down w/ runflats now anyway, but anyway

I'd have voted for both the SS3200 since that's what I've got, and for the SS3600 since that MIGHT be what I should have gone w/ (don't know for sure, and I don't think it's worth the effort so switch now),

BUT, If I were you, I'd go w/ AT LEAST the SS3200, nothing smaller, and possibly the SS3600.

Let us know what you choose!

Doing good!

I tend to be a little conservative. I put the mild cam in a few month ago now I’m tinking I should have went bigger. I first though about the SS3200 but I’m now feeling bold so I’m thinking the SS3600

I was in the same mind set - a little conservative and worried about street manners -Yankeevetteconvert gave me a ride in his with 3.73 gears (I have 3.42's) and it behaved just like a daily driver. At first I wasn't sure what the difference was when he let me drive it. On M-59 in Michigan there is a long entrance ramp to M-59 and he told me to stomp it as we got on the ramp - oh my, I got one installed right away!! Like I said above my wife drives it all the time.

ss3600. i will pick this converter when i do mine. the rule of thumb is at least go with a 3500 stall, because if you get a lower stall you will wish you went higher

I too tend to be a little conservative, and when I first got my Vette in March, 2005, I was set on keeping it all stock, or as close thereto as possible - then the mod bug bit me and I've have the dreaded disease ever since I don't remember what gears you are running, and that might make a LITTLE difference, but as I've stated, w/ 3.73's, I don't notice my SS3200 - it's not worth doing it over (yet, anyway), but if I did, I'd go w/ the SS3600

Have a Yank SS3200 with 3:15’s and it has been in for almost a month. The weather has been little cold up here so haven’t driven the car as much as I would want but so far the SS3200 has been a very good thing. Woke the car up. Seems like a good match.

It depends on what your future mods are going to be and how you drive the car. For us to sit here and say that I'd get this converter off of the information you've given us, could end you up with a converter you wouldn't be happy with.

I mean that if you plan on heads/cam, an SS3600 or PI 3200 would be my first choice. If you're going a turbo, which would use a different type of converter, I'd go with a PI 2600-2800 with 5 discs.

I have an "Old School" Yank SY 3500, which is what the SS series replaced, and Really like it. It's a lot "looser than the SS, but works for how I drive (street driven, Michelin Pilot Sport tires for now). The lower STR of the converter allow me to not overwhelm the tires like a converter with a higher STR would. Also, my midrange (from a 30- 45 mph roll) is Incredible. The car just flat out gets it!

You've got alot of stuff to think about before you buy the right converter FOR YOU! The best thing that you can do is to find someone in your area that has the converter that you like and ask them for a ride. This'd give you real world experience of the converter. Good Luck with your "Quest for the right Converter." Many of us have been there and it's not as fun as you'd imagine (at least it wasn't for me)!

i would say the SS3600, thats probably what i will go with at some point. i have a SY3500 in now which is a little looser than i want, but the car flys with it!

headers, tune, 3.42's, corsa, halltech, and the yank and it went 11.8's all day on 18 inch drag radials.
