Default Tire Pressure Sensors

How can you tell if tire pressure sensors are still good before you install them. I would hate to get them in there and find out the battery is either dead or almost dead!

It's impossible to tell if they're almost dead. If you want to find out if they work at all, go through the sensor training in your DIC. Take the suspect sensors - hit them with a magnet and if the horn honks - they work.

How long they'll work - nobody knows.

Check the date code on the sensor.

If your are talking about the original sensors on your '98, I personally would replace them now. The batteries are good for about 8 -9 years. Will vary a little depending on how much "sleep time" they've had in their life. Look on the sensor and you will see a circle or clock. An arrow will point to the month and the year will be on the left and right of the arrow. Replaced mine when I had tires put on last June. Originals had a date of Aug. '97. Bought the replacements from Fred Beans.

On the car I have two that are intermittant and I got a couple from a forum member and I didn't want to put them in only for them to be the same or worse than what I have.

Go through the retrain procedure and see if the IPC recognizes them. If it does, they're good.

The sensor may have enough juice to retrain just fine (temperature also is a factor), but will then continue to repeatedly fail when in operation.

Ask me how I know.

I would have never suspected, but that makes perfect sense (unfortunately).
Still, I don't see what else the OP can do.

Not a lot. Just check the date code, and roll the tires.

I don't know why in the h--- GM couldn't have had them made with replaceable batteries? It is stupid to have to replace 4 perfectly good sensors just because the fregging batterys are dead.

I'm just guessin' they figured 10 years or 100K miles is more than an expected lifespan for both batteries and ELECTRONICS subjected to the climate and stress these things go through. I'm surprised they last and perform as well as they do!
