Brake pads not adjusted right. You will have to pull the rear rotors to adjust the clearance on the brake pads. You can do a search and find a description of how to go about it.
Same thing happened to me when I was dropping the car off for an alignment!! Needless to say I had them adjust it there. When I saw the bill for the adjustment I was shocked and only then did I realize what was involved in the adjustment on these cars - not like they used to be!
In the middle of replacing the parking brake shoes
I have had the same problem for much longer than I want or should. Parts are now on order. The straw that broke "my" back was when the car rolled down my ever so slight drive way and it was a comedy of errors trying to get it stopped before crossing the street and hitting the neighbor's mail box!
I have researched this site to death and posted lots of questions with lots of info coming back. (search on Parking Brake) I have taken the rear rotors apart and feel that after all is said and done, I need new brake shoes, cable seems to functions OK, I can get the rotor back on just so tight (before it won't clear the parking shoe) and still cannot get the sucker to work. Therefore, ordered new shoes. All I can currently get with old shoes is a bunch of squealling when the p-brake is applied.
Also, p-brake is on both sides of the rear rotors, not just the passenger side, so try adjusting the star nut on both sides.
i just got done installing my new rotors. i have also just adjusted my parking brake because i could pull it all the way up to 90* and it would still not hold the car.
here you can see the little adjuster thing.
i started out with zero gap between the top of the adjuster and the body of it. by knocking the little notches back with a flathead screwdriver and a hammer, i was able to extend the body until the new rotor fit snugly on it but still turned freely.
the e-brake handle now comes fully engaged at 45* or so and i CANNOT push the car in neutral anymore.
