The GM Z06 vents require cutting and drilling the rocker panel to mount the scoops and to make them functional. You also have to cut or notch the rear wheel liner panel to allow ducting of the air from the scoop to the wheel.
It's really not that bad of a project if you have the right tools and some patience.
I really like the way they look, but kinda scared to cut my baby. I heard of some "stick on" types. Any info to where to buy them? Also how good do these "stick on" types hold up at high speeds, rain...ect.? Any info is appreciated.
Forget the stick ons. The Real ones are easy to put on. They take about 45 minutes for each side. I would order the whole kit from west coast corvette. It comes complete with the vents, ducts and inner fender wells. I think its about $239 or so. :yesnod:
$135 from LAPD for the genuine scoops and ducts for both sides. No templates though. Easy to do. You just need patience and a strong stomach :D
Mine arrived today from LAPD and no instructions or tmeplates!?! They told me to ask one of you who have installed before what is needed to do a clean install. They also spoke about measurments of Z06 ducts and vents? Any help would be most appreciated. Not trying to make a big deal of a basic simple install, yet I want to measure twice and cut only once!! Please be specific with advice. Thanks alot guys. :flag
I too just recieved my cooler with ducts, no instruction. I'm making a template and will cut it out using cardboard as a test. Did you use any sealer to the body once you installed them? I'm also going to take some pictures as I install them this weekend for anyone else who wants to do this. ;)
I installed my rear brake ducts myself.. from a Kit from LAPD.... they are Breathless performance ducts... they have twice the cooling surface as the Zo6 type and they sit inside the rocker and look more factory.. they also come with a template.. Make sure you use wide masking tape to tape off all the painted surface of your dorr and rocker so when you use a jig saw to cut the rocker , you do not scratch the paint.. You do NOt get inner wheel wells with any kit.. cutting one rocker takes about fifteen minutes with a template.. iif you do not have a twmplate.. there is little room for error.. so make sure you lay it out right.. removing the inner wheels well takes five minutes.. cutting them will be tough without a template.. you need some points of reference.. once you put the ducts on ( One bolt holds them .. ) Clearance at the wheel well is critical for a clean install ...
Anyone else out there with some good advice? Any specific mesurments need to be aware of befroe I start cutting? More responses please, i know more people have done this mod. Thanks again...
I have some advice for LAPD...
MAKE A TEMPLATE AND INSTRUCTIONS AND SEND IT WITH YOUR DUCTS!!!!!:mad
How about if someone sends their template to them and they duplicate it on heavy posterboard so they can sell a COMPLETE kit! This doesn't sound too hard to me.
The scoops and ducts are not bad to install. The only trick as everyone has pointed out, is getting a good template. I made my own out of cardboard. It worked pretty good but I ended up having to tweak the holes after the first initial cut. Thats O.K. though as I'd rather have too small a hole than I one that is too big. I think I still have the template somewhere if someone would like to have it. Its too big to fax so I'd have to send it by mail. As the pics show, the duct itself requires a small section to be cut out of the inner fender skirt but its real easy to cut. I used a pair of heavy scissors. Also, the duct mounts using an existing mounting screw for the inner fender skirt.
Rick... I'm getting a template from a forum member (any day now) it was provided by West Coast Corvettes as part of their package... No flames, but Mike's install, while it looks good... is not correct... if you measure the distance of the scoop from the door and the horizontal seam on a Z06 it is uniform and of a greater distance than as shown on Mike's car... in other words, his scoop is too far forward... Mike it looks nice so don't be offended!
I'd be happy to share the template with you if you are interested... let me know off list.
No offense taken Philo. The problem with these scoops and trying to install them is that they go into the hole at an angle so you have to compensate for that...at the beginning. Unfortunately, by the time I got the hole cut, the scoop ended up a little closer to the front than I wanted. Once you cut the hole to size, its a little late to do anything about it. The edge of the scoop is right up to the hole you cut. No room to adjust without having a big gaping hole to the side of the scoop. Oh well, nobody would notice unless they're a Z06 guru. :yesnod: And thanks for noticing
Just joshin ya
I would love to have this template can you send one to me by FED-EX. My address is at the post above yours. You the man! I will owe you a....
