I've never heard of putting motor oil in the tranny. Was it really dark, like well used motor oil? Does (did) the car shift fine?

I have a friend that does SCCA races, and he used a really light weight fluid in his tranny. Less viscous fluids save a LITTLE bit of power since you are not dragging the gears through thick stuff. Problem is his sincros (sp?) were going out after less than 30k miles. So yea it is a trick, but not good for duribility. Hopefully this helps.

Royal Purple Synchromesh is designed for manual transmissions that require ATF. Some people here like it but I wasn't a fan...

Color may not be the best way to determine what the fluid is. How thick is the fluid? Is it as thick as motor oil? If the tranny was driven hard and long it would have gotten very hot and the fluid may have changed color. That is why road racers use tranny coolers on the 6 speeds.

However, using a heavier oil is a tried and true method of getting a car with gear problems sold off.

Many guys with the C4 use a motor oil in their trannies. But actually, the Dexron III required for our C5s has a lower viscosity than a 5w30 oil does and the newer Dexron VI tranny spec lowers it even farther. The current blend of AMSOIL ATF which AMSOIL recommends for both Dexron III and VI applications has a viscosity of 6.8 cSt at 100C (212F) whereas a typical 30 weight motor oil has a viscosity of about 10-11 cSt at the same temp. I'd suggest sticking with an ATF as GM recommends. I've been using AMSOIL ATF in my tranny for years on the track without any failures.
