When you compare apples to apples an LS6 to an LS1, post 2001, would rwhp and rwtq be a close comparision if you used the same cam/heads/intake and exhaust plus tune? I realize there are other mechanical advantages the LS6 has over the LS1 but just curious. Thanks.
When you ask (effectively) "if I convert my LS1 to an LS6 by putting on LS6 heads (you need the LS6 valves etc. too), cam, etc." then "would rwhp and rwtq be a close comparision?"
Measured from the engine (flywheel) then yeah, you've now got an LS6. At the rear wheels, kinda depends, because the LS6 comes with the Z06 which has a different gearbox (MN6 versus M12), so depending on which gear/RPM/speed you're at will determine the delivered torque and HP to the rear wheels.
Let me go back to my old days in sales ... rather than answer YES/NO .... what are you looking to accomplish ?? Maybe there are better ways to get there.
well let me be more clear, I'm putting a new cam and heads "aftermarket" on the car. I already have ss headers hi-flow cats and z06 catback, it's an 01 so it has the ls6 intake, and a 4.10 rear. My question is how much more hp/tq would the ls6 develop over the ls1 at the crank with the same aftermarket components because of the z06's better block and piston design? BTW I'm looking to get in the 430 RWHP area.
You say "because of the z06's better block and piston design" ...
The LS6 and LS1 blocks are interchangeable. The 2001 Z06 block differs from the 2001 LS1 block only in that it has "windows" cast into it to "improve" airflow between cylinders within the block at high RPM. That change was incorporated in the 2002 LS1 engine AFAIK. Pistons are the same between the LS1 and LS6 in 2001 AFAIK.
The difference in HP and Torque in 2001 for the LS6 versus the LS1 was really accomplished in the following areas ...
* different cam
* different air cleaner box design
* larger MAF
* different valve springs (to match the cam)
* different head set-up
You're probably already 80 to 100+ percent there with " I'm putting a new cam and heads "aftermarket" on the car". That's basically what Chevy did to make an LS6 versus an LS1.
