Black Box on C5...need help...urgent
Do any of you guys now if GM looks at the black box when you take your car in under warranty with engine trouble?
Worried for a friend who might have over reved his car and don't know if GM will point a finger at him for over reving the car.

On the other hand,if you stored an emissions related fault code for some reason,we can tell the mph and rpm at the time of the fault, along with all other data parameters...That data is stored in the PCM history...

No...The SDM (sensing diagnostic module) or black box which some call it for some reason, retains crash data at the time of air bag deployment only.

Not if cleared by an Autotap...
chuckster,
Does the Autotap clear out the black box too or just the PCM/DTC?
There might be enough info from the DTC to cause some concern from the dealer. Holding the options button while pressing the fuel button quickly 4 times will display the codes (have pad & paper ready)
On one hand I say if I over-revved and bend a pushrod I should pay for that but on the other hand how can GM allow this to happen. Doesn't look like the fuel cut-off protects like a rev limiter would.

No rev limiter on the planet is going to save parts from a mechanical over rev when shifting to a lower gear when looking for a higher one...
If ya wann play ya gotta pay.

The tires tend to lock up when mis-downshifts happen (especially with the crappy stock shifter), and make the engine over rev.
