Default Service column lock message.....

Yesterday I had this happen. The car has already had the recall done but this still happend. The steering wheel never locked up but the fuel was shut off when I tried to move it and it died. The car would start up then when moved it would die. I let the car sit about ten minutes and the message went away and all was well. What would cause this to happen then all of the sudden start working? The message no longer appears either. Any ideas?

Yep. I was wondering if anyone has any more info. I didn't see anything on intermediate problems. I was under the impression once this happens you have to go to the dealer for service. Mine has done this once but it only lasted a few minutes and since then its been fine.

I had it happen once. I believe I did something like open and close the door with the car running / or unlock it without the fob... I don't remember exactly, but it happened when I was filling it with gas. Long story short, I got the DIC message and the car acted exactly as you described. I got pissed, went into the station, bought a set of pliers, removed the negative terminal for a minute or so, reattached it, pressed the lock/unlock buttons on the fob until the car honked. Code was gone, car ran fine. I have no idea why or if that fixed it. I immediately ordered the column lock delete kit, installed it ~1.5 weeks later and have had no problem since.

Hi, Make sure your battery is 100 % fully charged. Also check your battery to make sure it's not leaking. If you have a leak it will spill on the computer and the wiring to computer under battery will be ruined. Also check body grounds. (98's = grounds corroding). Check search here on the forum and you'll see alot of articles on these problem. The man to speak to is forum member Bill Curlee. He's the best. Good Luck.>George

If you have had the recall done and the lockplate has been removed, the column will not actually lock, but the actuator will still cycle. The actuator does not have to cycle for the BCM to be satisfied, but the relay in the actuator harness does.
Just because the relay fails to cycle, does not mean it will never work again. Most likely, either the relay did not cycle correctly, or the BCM just could not determine if the column was unlocked, so it cut the fuel off when you tried to drive it.
If the relay unsticks and cycles the next time you start the car, then the BCM is happy and does not cut the fuel.
Before it happens again, I would either replace the actuator harness with a new GM version or install an aftermarket version of the CLB.
