Is a non-Z06 C5 Diff any different than a Z06 Diff?
I'm looking at a non-Z06 C5 rear end to replace the whining rear in m car. My question is about the differential itself (as in the limited slip). Is it mechanically and functionally the same as a Z06 diff? I don't want to lose any clamping force since I race on a 335/30-18 Hoosier A6 back tire and don't want to one-tire-fy like my old Z/28 did.
The ratio's may be the same but as I recall the Z06 gears are shot peaned and the regular C-5's are not.
That's what I've heard. I'm not worried about that so much since my car won't be drag raced again and makes "only" 450RWHP. But I am worried about the diff. itself.

As far as I know shot peening is the only difference. If you are interested in beefing up your diff, check out DTE's site. They have several different options to choose from.

I'm planning to do a DTE sometime next year. At that time I'm going to have my tranny built and do MN6 gears and go w/ a 3.90 DTE. For now I just want to be able to drive down the freeway without an instant-headache inducing whine.

The only way you would experience a whine is if the diff is either set up wrong or damaged (or both) to begin with.
You should be fine.
