I have a 98 vert with 40 K on the clock, I love the car, I am thinking of starting mods like this.
Install X pipe, bassani.
install air intake, honker, whatever research proves the best.
I am not anxious to take off the stock mufflers I like the sound but wish it was a little stronger.
I what I read is right I should gain more actual usable power than with just cat backs. I think the catbacks are mostlly for sound. Any one have any thoughts on this.
As far as bang for the buck I'd definitely do the air intake first. Consider a Varaam which most people really have positive feedback on. Once your vette breathes better, you'll notice some xtra spunk from her. It all depends what your goals are. If you want horsepower increases, go for the intake first, then a custom dyno tune. The x pipe or cat back exhaust don't add much hp for the $$ you spend like you mentioned.
For seat of the pants effect, doing a rear end differential change really has excellent results for the $$ spent. Is yours an A4 or manual? If it's an A4 is it 2.73 or 3.15 diff?
I just ordered a Vararam air system and am anxously awaiting for it to come. I have not worked on cars for decades but I used to be able to swap out an engine in an old ford. I think I will attempt to install the Vararam myself. Any suggestions

PM my buddy "chuckster" here on the forum. He's done his twice and can give u tips.
In my opinion, an X-pipe is the first mod anyone should do to their exhaust system... the factory H-pipe is mostly blocked off and gives the car a choppy sound, the X-pipe smooths the sound out considerably. The only way an X-pipe shouldn't be your first move is if you later plan to add a header system that includes its own X-pipe.
I think most people would choose to keep their factory mufflers if they had done the X-pipe before buying their aftermarket mufflers. My '02 Z went from fugly sounding to awesome with the addition of the LG Pro header/X-pipe combo with the factory Ti mufflers. No more choppy sound, no more resonance at 2100 RPM. All smooth, wide open high pitched snarl and quiet burble cruise. I love it.
