Default Cheap exhaust mod for some sound?

Hey guys,

I've been cruising around the posts and see that replacing the exhaust system will only net a few ponies, maybe even no gain whatsoever. And that's fine, but why should I shell out nearly $1000 for a full exhaust system if I just want some sound? Is there a place I can buy just a louder set of mufflers and not the intermediate pipe?

Thanks,
Aubry

Default don't change... modify existing

If you don't want to shell out even the 350-400 for the Z06 Ti exhaust a quick easy mod is to have a shunt welding into place coming from the ingoing pipe before the muffler and connecting to one of the outgoing exhaust pipes.... my father-in-laws 2004 has this and I think it sounds great.... I have also seen it done on the Ti systems but I have yet to try it... but the stock sounded great with it....I don't have any pics but if you search around on here there will be some or maybe someone else will post a pic of the mod...

Do a search for the "A&A exhaust mod", and it will explain the above post.

Catbacks don't include the mid-pipes... systems range from $500-$1300... Corvette Tax. Headers and mid-pipes are more.

Like said search for the A&A mod or buy a Z06 Ti system used from the for sale section.

It is not as loud as you would expect. There is ZERO drone at any RPM and it is very crisp sounding at WOT. I do not have a clip, sorry.

If you aren't into the Vette specialty companies, Flowmaster makes the Series 80s. They're reasonable through Summit Racing - a little under $600 for the pair. You can buy the pipes that go over the rear axles, or a good shop can just cut the stock mufflers off and slide the FMs on.

From what I've found, they're aluminized steel rather than stainless, so more subject to rust. That said, I've got the aluminized on my Shelby, which runs short distances (no, not quarter mile at a time ) and sits in the garage a lot. And a FM on the WS6 T/A and on the '94 GMC a friend bought from me. That exhaust has been in place for about 11 years now.

The FM Series 80s on the Vette have the exotic howl, but with a musclecar undertone of rumblerumblerumble. You do get the drone, on my A4 w/3.15 gears it kicks in about 75MPH. Living in the People's Republic of California, best not to get above that on the highways anyway. Still, it annoys my wife , but makes my teenager daughter smile.

another option would be either mechanical or (preferred) electric exhaust cutouts. A good set will run between $200-300 + install. But it allows you to be quiet when you want to. and be loud and proud on the road.

Every car I've heard so far with the A&A mod... Well, the idle sounds like a bunch of tin cans being kicked around. Sounds good when revving, though.

My biggest motivation to buy an aftermarket exhaust was the A&A mod. After I did it, and heard the car from outside, I was embarrassed for people to hear it.

Not mine, has a deep rumble to it. I heard it depends on the size and position of the pipe you use. Mine is very close to the exhaust. Some are further out on the edges.

Hummm....

I could not disagree more. I have had multiple people ask what kind of mufflers I had because they liked the sound of them. Even at Synergys dyno day last weekend, there was a croud of people that gathered when I fired it up.
