Default question on cutouts

Hey guys,

I live in Va and I was wondering if the electric cutouts would pass inspection? I would definitely be getting the electric cutouts so that I could open and close them when and where I wanted, but I am not sure if they would pass inspection.

Thanks!

If they stick the sniffer in the ends with them closed should be the same exhaust emissions IMHO

technically i believe its illegal, so if they catch you, youre probably in trouble. however, it depends on where in va you live and what shop you go to as to how likely you are to be caught. when my car was registered in nova, they did a much more thorough inspection but never lifted the car to look at every inch of the exhaust, so you might have been able to get away with it. as long as they are closed when you run emissions, you shouldnt have problems passing. down south where there are no emissions, they dont pay attention at all. might even get a place that asks if you want cut outs put on, just depends. if you install them in a way that you can uninstall them (flanges or clamps or something), then if you get caught, you can just drive home, jack it up, switch them with some sections of pipe, get rechecked, then switch back. hope that helps.

I don't think the cut outs would be illegal unless they were open.

Do you have to do the inspection in NOVA? I am in the Shenandoah Valley (maybe an hour away) and we don't do that pipe sniffing nonsense here.

Emissions testing is NOT a part of Va State inspections. Doesnt make them legal, but they will not test for it. Just dont run them open on the street and not expect to get caught.

Plus, if you have them closed, they wouldnt be able to tell unless they looked under the car.

P.S.
Electric cutouts are cool, but the break all the time. Expect it.

Yes it is illegal to operate in Virginia a vette with cutouts, regardless of whether you use them or not. Technically they can't even be offered for off road use in Virginia. So a legitimate shop won't even carry them. Forewarned !!

§ 46.2-1047. Muffler cutout, etc., illegal.

It shall be unlawful to sell or offer for sale any (i) muffler without interior baffle plates or other effective muffling device or (ii) gutted muffler, muffler cutout, or straight exhaust. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate on the highways in the Commonwealth a motor vehicle, moped, or motorized skateboard or scooter equipped with a gutted muffler, muffler cutout, or straight exhaust.

I guess opposed to all the illegitimate shops in Virginia.

Most states don't allow the use/install of cutouts. But the law is only a guideline until you get caught. Every now and then shops get in trouble. Never found a licensed shop that would put the sale/install on an invoice. Many want cash.
