While higher compression ratios make more power from a given airflow, if you want to make big power you go FI and move more air... But if you think about it, 99% of the time when you are driving you aren't anywhere near the range where you would need to inject water, and the fuel economy benefits all of the time so there is a payoff every day for using water injection, even if you don't ever get deep enough into the power to really need it.
With the cost of fuel being in the mid-two dollar range now, and high test ($2.85 here in Indy this week), even more, I would think that a system that would let you burn regular in our cars would be worth having..
