Well, for those of you who have been following my recent engine troubles in the general forum, I just got a message from the dealership. Apparantly they had incorrectly installed a valve spring retainer and it came loose several hundred miles after picking up the car.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the valve spring retainer comes loose, won't that cause the valve not to retract and be hit repeatedly by the piston? This would explain the horrible banging/whacking sounds I heard.
Re: Valve spring ratainer came loose....... (sorka)
Alan,
I'm not sure why they would have removed the valve keepers if all they did was install new rings. They may have installed new valve seals while the had it down...if so...that would require removing the keepers and the spring retainer.
Re: Valve spring ratainer came loose....... (sorka)
sorka,
My guess is that they did NOT remove the head and check for any piston damage. I would want to make sure the valve was not bent....and I'd want to be sure the pushrod wasn't bent.
Re: Valve spring ratainer came loose....... (sorka)
Alan, were you the one with the bent pushrods causing a lousy Dyno run??? I remember someone had that problem. dealer changed everything to fix it but nothing worked till they looked at the pushrods..
Re: Valve spring ratainer came loose....... (sorka)
They, of course, would like to get by with as little work as possible! I think you have a good case for for going in to check for "interior" damage. I shudder at the thought, but they should do it right. :smash:
Re: Valve spring ratainer came loose....... (sorka)
I can't imagine the valve was not bent in the proccess...the piston may be OK, but that situation can ONLY be evaluated properly with the head removed for inspection. Do a compresion test & compare that cylinder to the rest.

The dealership is not going to do anything. I would like to say that I care but I don't have the energy to fight them especially since I just signed and faxed back GMs buyback offer which I thought was very very generous. The same dealership is also the one that will do the vehicle inspection.

I am so happy for you that GM is buying back your car. Stories like this scare the shi* out of me!
